97 freightliner, detroit engine. today a red light on dash lit up. ''water level'' I checked resivour it was full. unplugged sensor in resivour and straight wired pigtail, all that did was give me a ' check engine light. replace sensor ? or look for another cause for light coming on ?

I had this same problem and it ended up being sensor in the tank.

its the sensor, and i believe you cannot just bypass the sensor by connecting or disconnecting the wires to it.

I was having the same problem with a 1995 Kenworth t600 with a 12.7 Detroit engine the water level and the check engine light were coming on so I just disconnected the wire from the sensor. The water temp gages are showing fine so I will be replacing the sensor soon

Sensor or wiring right at the sensor plug are the 2 most common failures. Grab each wire and give it a good tug at the plug. If the wires are broken internally they'll pull apart, get harness repair end.

    heavyhaulerss and SAR Thank this.

In my T660 there's a magnetic float in the tank. The sensor is in the shape of a rod and snaps into a tube that's actually the same tube that the magnetic float inside the tank floats up and down on.

Pull the sensor rod and touch the tip of it with a magnet, if the light goes off then it's not the sensor but the float instead.

I couldn't get it to float so I had to replace the whole coolant tank.

Turned out to be the pigtail that plugged into the sensor. Tried sensor first. $27.00 at freightliner for the pigtail. $46.00 for the sensor.

    SAR and GrapeApe Thank this.

I bought 2 and then a week later bought the whole sensor and injector harness.
Just thought if the ends are going bad. I didn't want to be stuck with stop engine light beside the road in some mountain pass or worse downtown Chicago during rush hour.

Well i thought I had my low Water level light problem fixed. It stayed out for a hour then back on again. any suggestions? Thinking it's a ground issue. Where to look? Followed the sensor wires thru the air loom, all looks good.
