Driving on shoulder I-5

This is the correct answer.
It's an unwritten rule, accepted practice in Oregon because they have stuff over 100K.
DON'T do it in California.

And those big yellow signs they put at the top of those passes that tell you what your speed should be, they went through all the trouble to put those up for a reason.

 

Between Lewiston, ID and Spokane, WA there was a sign on my first trip through there that said you could move slow moving vehicles to the shoulder and make a lane during daylight hours. Of course they hadn't plowed or treated the roads in ages and there were wrecked cars and even a wrecked ambulance on its side that was going to rescue those drivers. I chose to stay in my lane lol

 

I wouldn't and never will. Thats an emergency/breakdown lane, period. There is another lane to pass on.

 

If something happens while your riding over there your insurance company is going to tell you to take a hike.

 

I have driven, and will drive more, but I won't use that lane unless I'm going too slow, say 10 or 15 mph, which won't happen. Last time I went south bound, I passed a guy doing just that. So using it at that speed is justifiable, imo, because that's just about standing still. Could create a bad situation if he was in travel lanes and too many trucks approached at the same time.
