Have any of you done this? I bought a 12g SD card today and haven't even put it in. If you have done this, what is better about having extra space-memory in these GPS units?

I'm hoping for more than 10 saved locations . And better map memory. While I was in Connecticut recently the screen froze and an error popped up saying I was out of memory. So I bought a SD card. Is there a setting I must go to to get the RM 530 unit to recognize and use the SD memory? Thx

I had the same problem with my 730. Got so fed up with it I put two .45 slugs through it and swore off an RM product that didn't have laminated pages. Several friends have bought the 740 only to find it's only useful purpose was as a paperweight. As far as adding a SD card, I'm not sure...but I have doubts it would help much. There seems to be some issue with RM products clearing their memory, I would shut mine off several times a day and the dang thing still froze up on me.

Just poorly tested units released on drivers to beta test was the conclusion I came up with. The Microsoft model.

I have a RM720 with an 8G micro SD. No issues.

@Mark Kling might be able to help out here...

I have a RM740 and have not had any issues with it. I don't like certain things about the unit, but mine hasn't frozen or gone psycho like about half of the posts about it warn. I power off my device every day when I sleep. I've only had the unit fall off of the mount once, before I relocated it to current position.

I will say I'm not sure the 7 inch units provide $100-200 more benefit than the 5 inch units. YMMV.

After some research, it seems that I must be connected to the Dock app via a cable to get the unit to recognize/use the new SD card. I guess I'll be waiting a few weeks until I go home to do that. :(

An SD card is just somewhere to store data. If it gives you the ability to store a ton more address book entries then great. However as has been stated in this thread these POSs freeze up, don't respond well to the touch screen and will occasionally throw up little messages in C++ format which will involve powering back up.
It has been mentioned that they get the customer do the field work by having YOU pay $400 or more for the privilege. All electronics companies do this. We did at Motorola. One of my jobs there was to work on this exact thing. It is a con.
The problem is not enough internal memory and an SD card isn't going to help that. It is comparable to the floppy disks. The disk acted as memory by reading and writing to it quickly. Slow as hell.
I just suffer through mine but I have noticed a distinct reduction in performance from my first to my second. They are getting worse.
My biggest complaint about the RM is the stupid fuel search. You connect to your hotspot going down the road and search for fuelstops. These idiots have programmed it with not just truckstops but all the gas stations too !! That is moronic. I'm a truck. I profiled as a truck. Why on earth would you give me the price of Nicks Shell Station??

    1. There is a Rand Support Thread and if you looked just a little more you would have seen it in the 1st fold of this section. No need to open up another thread.

    2. Unless you have a x10 or x20 you have no need for an SD Card in the x30's or the x40's since all there files are internal. In Fact, do not put an SD Card in the x30's.. Since the software does not call to the SD Card sometimes it does affect the software running.. mostly freezing.

    3. Try to reboot the unit about every 3-4 days. It has limited internal memory and if you keep loading pages it simply runs the memory out.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Putting bullets thru it does not help in troubleshooting.. It probably was an EL model. And if I recall you posted before about this. Any machine you leave on and run different pages will at sometime run out of stored memory.

    Thanks,
    Mark

For the x30, the Dock will give you updates, it does nothing for the SD Card if you have one in the External SD slot. Please take it out.

Ok mark I will. But, if you don't mind. Why is that slot there?
