Don't come into texas with that. Texas DPS will pull you over and check it carefully. If you aint got papers on that trailer in your permit book etc they will probably take it.
I had a trailer like that, it's tag was taken off and that story I wont write here. There was a very simple reason it was taken off by a particular property owner. I ran with it for weeks until Texas corraled me. They said for me to run by headquarters and get a new plate for that trailer. (Company where equiptment was based, we had a office drone whose job is nothing but registrations and tags etc.)
Thinking more carefully on other trailers, I don't recall any without it's tag. Usually apportioned to one state or another. No big deal as long its on there.

I pulled a tank trailer without a plate one time. This was about 1997. I didn't notice if the plate was there when I left, so I called central dispatch, they did some checking, and told me it was a California permanent registration and that I was okay as long as I had the valid stamped registration in my possession, which I did. I stopped at the Canadian border for customs clearance, got that handled, then when I went out to my truck, a RCMP and a Customs Canada officer were waiting for me, and pointed out that my trailer had no plate. I told them what dispatch told me, and showed them the paper. The Mountie took it inside and made a phone call, came back out and gave me the "On yer way, now."
I don't know if Cali still does that, or if any other state does.
From then on, I never left the yard without making sure the trailer had a valid, legible, securely mounted license plate, illuminated by a functioning white light permanently affixed to the trailer in a workmanlike manner..... -
Hell with the cardboard.... Just use your finger and write that on the back of the dirty trailer doors.buzzarddriver Thanks this.

In my state, either a plate OR registration is "prima facia" evidence of valid registration. It is a state violation for not having a plate, but it isn't a violation you would ticketed over. If you have neither, then you are subject to a citation. The regulation requiring a plate is a state violation (as opposed to Federal) and carries little or no CSA score. It will however draw attention to your trailer and invite being stopped to see if you in fact do have a registration.
