I give my mechanic the key. I go home. Come back it's fixed and I pay the bill.

You did the same thing. The truck stop mechanic did 100% of the work including moving the truck into the shop and back to the yard. All you did that could possibly be construed as on duty would be paying the bill. I would not worry about that.

If you aint wrenching on that thing ( Or even see it...) it's off duty.

Ive spent time in the berth while they worked on mine. Extra charge for snoring. =)

    Otherwise hotel and off duty.

But what if I list my hobby as "turning wrenches" and have a doctor's note that says I have to work on my truck to relieve stress?

What logs? That's fun time in the shop. Wrench... wrench... wrench... especially when getting ready for a crossing of the GWB later that night.

Now if I can find me a wrench.... oh wait.. let's not go there.

    Lepton1 Thanks this.

Private property has nothing to do with it but ... here is the rub, how is the cop going to find out. You can claim that the tech took the truck and you went in to sit and watch TV for a few hours.

Not much of a rub considering its common knowledge that a truck stop mechanic isn't going to move your truck.
Vast majority of them don't even have a CDL. That's before we even delv into truck stop insurance liability issues.

I would do exactly what you did. Some I think are just way to literal about following every law to the exact tee.Like they have never even drove over the posted speed limit. Its trucking not exactly building rockets.

I drive over the speed limit, change lanes in the middle of intersections I've even smoked in my cab while hauling hazmat.
Not only that I've even changed lanes crossing over a solid white line.

    Lepton1 Thanks this.
