After 30 yrs in the business and ten of those being an o/p with own authority and 14 trks on the road I realized that today's drivers don't and won't do proper diligent background on a company. Lease purchases are only to the benefit of the company period. Do the math. I pay my drivers an average of $80k per year and year end bonus as I grow. I've sacrificed a tremendous deal to get where I am. I realize all have to start somewhere and when you do always know you will be taken advantage of. Take the hits and learn in the process. Listen to the wisdom of the old school drivers, don't be a follower but make your own path. Mega carriers only care about there own bottom line not your. They know you can be replaced by painting another pretty picture to there next victim and will always continue to do the same. Trucking is not what it was 30, 40 yrs ago where at that time it was an honor to be a professional driver. Only but a few companies will care for there drivers as myself for my drivers. I hope that all who complain just take a deep breath and focus on what is truly important and that is only you. Thanks for reading.

Excellent perspective, thank you. We were heavily propagandized and it only took a couple weeks to realizeI'd been had lol. I'm planning on going the same route as you with 2 other owner ops in my family. You sound like a true professional and a great person to work with. I wish you continued success.

    Lonesome and DoubleO7 Thank this.

None of my O/O family members had the free time to train me. My wife's job moved us to New Mexico and sadly, swift was my only option.

The spring in the fuel pedal was sticking so the engine brake wouldn't activate. I'd have to place my toes under the pedal and pull upward to get the engine brake to activate. I hadn't yet realized this was the problem when I nearly lit the brakes on fire and rolled the truck.
It was eye opening. I realized then that they didn't really care about their drivers.

For you guys taking your beatings at the mega carriers, I STRONGLY urge you to keep your nose clean , do 6 to 12 months, then find a carrier with a legitimate weekly pay guarantee. Seek out other drivers for their opinions. Talk to a number of them, not just one. Play the game and get where you want to be.

It amazes me that these Rookies expect top pay, top equipment and no rules right out of school. So you got a CDL, so what, you know nothing. Am I going to risk $1/4 million dollars of equipment and load with a complete newbie? NO! You will get a beat up truck limited to 60-62mph until you prove you are not an idiot. And I will micro manage you because I pay the bills for your screw ups! You want top pay, show me you have earned it. This rant is the very reason I have a min requirement of 3 years trouble free driving before I hire anyone.
