How's it going everyone. I've read a thread with mostly all the information I could need but I have a few questions for anybody who knows first hand.

I am a veteran, from what I understand is my actice time serve in the military will be looked at as prior service. Meaning it will be as if I've been working there for 5 years.

To continue... Does that mean I will start at 5 years pay and vacation accrued? What else is beneficial about that?

Also, is anybody currently in or recently finished their 90 fay probabtion. If so, how was it? Thanks in advance.

No clue as to the USPS work, but as a retired First Sergeant I wanted to welcome you aboard and thank you for your service.

Your military service will get you hiring priority. The USPS hiring manager must justify in writing, amd get the approval of HR to bypass a VET on the list. All vets must be exhausted before non vets can be hired, regardless of score.

Your vet status will not apply to pay setting.

Your vet staus will apply for leave accural, if you have less than 3 years cumulative service, you leave will be at the 4 hours per 80 hour pay period. 4-15 years is at 6 hours per pay period. 15+ years is at 8 hours per pay period.

You will have the opportunity to "buy back" your military service time for retirement purposes. Essentially each year of service equals 1% of your retirement pay. Retirement pay is based upon you average high 3 years.

If you had 3 years of exactly $100,000 pay, your average would be $100,000. If you put in 20 years at the post office and were of retirement age,, and you bought back 4 years military service, you would get 24% of $100,000, or $24,000 annually until you die. There is a survivors option where your spouse could continue to collect a reduced amount if you die first, but I am not too clear on tne details, I only know it exist.

There is also TSP, which is a 401k style retirement plan with USPS match. All federal employees can use TSP, it is not vet exclusive.

The USPS has a no layoff or reduction in force (RIF) contract, but if that were to change or you go to another federal agency, your military service allows you to have an adjusted Service Computation Date. The RIF or layoffs are based upon this date which is your seniority date.

My interview is on the 27th of September. I am hoping this is becomes life long for me. I hear nothing but good on the full time side, once you get over there. I have to take advantage of this career position though it is part time.
