Hi Kiddies,
Well I almost made it to CDL school but got sidelined by lack of money...
Accepted to both a private and company run but the #### household bills have to be covered.
The State of California is broke, the VA is no help, no family to borrow from, no savings since we live month to month with my JOB (just over broke).
Have written philanthropists and others with no luck.
I think I have tried just about everything legal and I refuse to go to the darkside even if they do have cookies.
Of all the times in my life when I was ahead on money I should have gone to school.
Instead I foolishly spent the money on family expenses like food, clothes, shoes, bikes, broken bones, etc.
Should have gone for the CDL, 30 years ago but felt my responsibility was wife, kids and home.
Kids are grown and gone (doing fine thank you).
Home is what home is.
Wife is behind me 100%, says she can do Ok with away time even though she is disabled. God Bless that woman.
Should not be this hard to scrape up a lousy $2000.
Anyway, not trying to drone on or sound like a whiner but I guess some things were not meant to be.
As I have stated before, if it could be done on desire alone......
If it is OK with you fine folks, I would like to continue reading this forum.
Truely enjoy reading of the adventures, challenges, laughs and information you all provide.
Please everyone, be safe out there.

Sorry it's not working out for you! Definitely stick around and continue to join in the mayhem!

Have you checked with your local community college. Some community colleges offer CDL programs... and from what you're saying you would easily qualify for grants and/or student loans.
It's something to look into.Papa T Thanks this. -
Seriously though, just keep chipping away at trying to find something. Sooner or later you will get lucky.
There are some training companies that will sponsor you through school. But you have to agree to give them a certain length of time after you get through that school. If you break the contract, they really cost you.
And while you are under that contract, they sort of have you by the gonads. They can ship you across the country, then leave you hang there, or any other number of not so nice options.
The community college or applied technical school is certainly the most economical way to go. These private trucking schools seem to be way overpriced!
I'm concerned when you say your wife is disabled. Yeah, I know, it's really none of my business. But you need to take a long hard look at reality here and see if she really will be OK with you gone. She may be saying this because she knows how bad you want to do it. (I know that is something my wife would do.)
Good luckPapa T Thanks this. -
If you were recently laid off the government usually has a program to help you start another career that is what I did in 05.. Just check with you local unemployment office. It is paid by the federal not state government..
Papa T Thanks this. -
Thanks for the info. I have tried all of the above and......
Community College, their CDL school locked the doors, the folks who graduated have not been hired other than burger flippin'.
I was sort of stooooooopid in that my last couple of jobs were all as a so called "Independent Contractor" which means unemployment won't give you the time of day.
This is a lady who was told she would never walk again in 2002, it has been a long and painful journey but working together we have her up and cruisin' on a cane.
Ok, I guess I'll just look at the past efforts as a 9 count, will get my old, but rather cute (her words) butt off the canvas and keep searching.
Again, Thanks for everything.

Papa (seems odd to say that to somebody who's pretty near my own age..)
If you haven't, I'd still go talk to the Unemployment people. Sure, you may not qualify for unemployment (I didn't), but they DO have programs. My personal saviour was Workforce Investment Act... a federal program to assist in worker retraining. About all you have to do is prove (not hard) that you are not hireable in your old career. Oh, and that you WOULD be hireable with your chosen schooling (Ok, there's a bit more to it than that, but not much. I had my grant approval in 2 weeks)
I understand Big Don's concern - I have a friend living with us who's 100% disabled. The downside is, it's degenerative. You and your wife sound like a pretty darn determined pair. I wonder if she could climb in/out of a truck... that would be 17 kinds of cool. In either event, kudos on both of yah! Doesn't sound like either one of you lives in the land of Make Believe.
Failing all the independent schools, there are companies that provide training (of varying quality, naturally), though I hear some of them are shutting down their schools. Last I heard (and as a last resort) Swift still has theirs going...Papa T Thanks this. -
Wouldn't have it any other way.
Don't forget the bovine excrement we throw in every now and then.
Papa T Thanks this. -
is that what it is?
I just thought you made a terrible chocolate cake.
Live and learn, I always sayPapa T Thanks this. -
