When you guys say make sure they are smooth and not "chewed" up. Do it mean just that, no marks in it like something a dog had in it mouth type deal? Obviously I have not much mechanical experience as far as the insides of a motor goes any help is appreciated.

Yes, you want to see a shiny, smooth surface with no pitting or tracking.

Tiny scratches you can barely feel with your fingernail are fine. Pitting and deep gouges are bad.
