So I am looking for suggestions on antenna setup for my Volvo 670 and how best to ground the antennas.

I would like information on both using stock mirror mounts and the bird perch mounts (not sure if company will allow the use of them or for me to run coax through door seal for them)

I am running a stock cobra 29 and currently get out 2 to 3 miles depending on terrain. I pull both dry van and reefer. My SWR (read by the radios meter Wich I know may not be accurate) is approx 1.2.

I will likely have a CB shop install and tune the antennas after I figure out what to purchase.

I may in the future get radio peaked and tuned.

Ideally I would like to get around 5 to 7 mile range out of this radio.

Thanks for all replies and suggestions I am a novice CBer so feel free to dumb things down but don't shy away from the details certainly willing to put in some research just been coming up short on much specific to Volvo 670.

    Vampire Thanks this.

I have driven three different Volvo 670's in the last ten years and despite conventional wisdom I never had a problem using the stock mirror mount ( driver side only) and stock coax but replacing antenna with a Wilson 2000 with 10" shaft. The swr was adjusted to 1.2 and typical transmit and receive range was 6 to 10 miles with stock single final radios( cobra 29,uniden78,Galaxy 929 etc.). Also used 10 meter exports like General Lee but that is the most power you would want to run because any more than 40 watts could damage Rami junction box( told that by a volvo tech) . However with that being said the most efficient setup was using the perch on driver side ( wind will tighten perch) with Wilson 2000 and 18' of coax run down mirror arm, in through door hinge, across dash and up to top on passenger side and back to radio. Remove the bolt on the mirror arm bracket that has the ground strap attached to it and using that location was able to get swr to 1.2 and transmit and receive was easily 10+ miles with 29 type radios and up to 15+ with 10 meter type radios. To comment on the idea of a peak and tune just beware of what the cb shop is selling. There are some shops that a peak and tune consists of turning up carrier past legal 4 watts and cranking up modulation levels past 100% which will yeild more wattage than stock but audio clarity will suffer and in some cases range will actually decrease because all the power output is bleeding onto unintended frequencies. My advice would be to seek out a cb shop that is qualified to do a proper radio alignment per manufacture service guidelines and pocesses the proper test equipment to perform an alignment. Me personally, after 20 years of trying almost every modification and P&T available, am just running cobra 29 type radios and with good antenna setup average 6 to 10 miles, hope this helps.

Another question since I went with a perch do I need to remove the mirror mounted antennas?

Did you mount Francis on driver side or passenger? I believe the driver side antenna is for cb and passenger side antenna is for AM/FM radio and TV, so if new antenna is on driver side and the factory antenna on that side is no longer in use it shouldn't pose a problem, so if you want to leave it on thats fine. You may want to measure from ground to antenna mount and add that to antenna length and see if you are at 13'6" and under just to make sure you are not prone to striking something( tree, overpass etc.) and breaking antenna. If it is 9' to antenna mount plus the 5'6" antenna that would be 14'6" , so it might be advisable to go with a 4'6" Francis, just something to consider.

Personally not a fan of those ird perches nor the francis....
Used a cpl perches and they ended up stripping out the holes....
Francis is a basic flimsey ant..
I ended up running my own coax and mounting my 10k(over kill for a 29)..Big diff but still not very good..Turns out after i got my stryker i got a lil etter but still not what expected...Turns out it was ause of the poor tune on my stryker..
Prob with the trks today is call counterpoise(aka what everyone thinks is ground)..Counterpoise is basically what an amt likes to see below itself in metal or an exact mirror image of itself..
Bonding helps to some degree but not the cure..
If i remember correctly i wire brushed off all the blk coating off the morror arm and mounted my own bracket then ran a cpl braded straps on both sides of the door hinge and cleaned both ennd of the factory braded wire..I eventually replaced it to with wider stuff..
I was finally getting good range and then new cascadia showed up..Aww ffs gotta start again.....NOWWWW i got this cascadia doin at time without skip 30ish mi and yet again new trks are on the way soon..
Constant battle to get what ya got workin right till you need more info about somethin..The maddening circle then starts..

I saw this last night. It looked interesting. The driver said it reaches out 15 miles or so.

Is that bottom part being used as the ground plane? Essentially making it not need a ground

It should be grounded to the mirror arm. I didn't look too closely.

Those mirror arms are coated in a rubber/plastic unless he ground it off in that spot
