I noticed rates have been going up this year and I'm trying to understand what's driving this truck shortage. Is it more shipping activity, trucks changing to ELD's or something else?

As dune said a combination of a bunch of things. I have had three of the last for weeks over 7k gross. Missed out on a name your price load because of my starter saturday. Only thing not making it hurt to bad I got a close to name your price load lined up for tomorrow after I get the starter on, and to top it off it is a power only load.

The call saturday was a broker I have hauled a couple loads for recently. He was desperate to get a flatbed load on the road that someone else canceled on. I just happened to be empty In the Atlanta area but unfortunately my truck is down. I actually felt a little bad for him. I called the guy that helps me dispatch and dispatches our 10 other flats including a couple owner ops as the broker originally tried to get him. Unfortunately we had no one empty. He was so desperate he was calling everyone he had in his phone or prior contact with that had an Atlanta number.

The power only load is a fema load that the same dispatcher called me about it. Another one of his broker contacts for a larger carrier called him desperate. He committed my truck knowing I would do it. It's not quite a name your price but I will be committed to some round trips for the week.

Freight and rates are there right now and not that hard to find either.

Exactly what I am talking about. Quite a bit of that floating around right now.

As a shipper in my previous life I have been on the wrong end of that in the past. It sucks but it is what is when somebody screws up, capacity is tight, but you still have to get a load delivered . Lol

Not every load like that has the typical BS that you would expect. I've done bunch of open up the check book and show me the money loads this summer as have several of my friends. Lots of them 1 pick 1 drop. I don't feel sorry at all for any broker out there paying a carrier rates like that. Why would you? They're not the one paying the freight and if they are they'll soon be out of business. Good riddance. It's about time that broker herd got thinned out anyway. There's always been a much worse glut of brokers out here than there have been trucks anyway.
