Yep that’s exactly what I’m talking about. The bearing seemed fine otherwise. Wasn’t loose or any signs of heat, but I wouldn’t trust it. Road service calls are too expensive to take the chance on a $30 bearing

Yeah, I always take wheel end stuff more seriously than anything else really. When something goes wrong here, it could easily cost someone their life!!!

Got it done at a shop way way out of my normal operating range. Got bored and grabbed a long load, paid for it here.
Specifically said no metal shavings in my original post.
This was actually the closest guess-
This ended up being the cone. Which is fine. The bearings are also fine, I was very initially worried they'd galled with holding over the old ones.
The cone used to replace my old one, had a fair bit of tarnish on it. Once it sat back down in place after a few miles, and got comfortable on the spindle with the bearings rolling over it, the tarnish came off into the oil.
Simple as that.
Freaked me right the hell out.Heavyd, xsetra and JimmyWells Thank this. -
The insurance claim on a wheel end coming off on the road depending on your and the motoring public's luck, would likely make the road service call look cheap too!
