That's why I will never own a truck newer than a 99. Paper logs and the HOS are total BS as it is. ELDs are for the weak/lazy slaves who cannot add and subtract.

In the OP situation, just communicate with them that once you stop and park, whether it's bobtail or hooked to the empty, you can't move until X time. Then ask them what is the best way to do this. I've parked at a couple customers who will try to load or unload me an hour or two before my break is up and I have to tell them I can't; you'll have to come back at X time and get me. I run my own authority and I only take loads I can legally do. If your a company guy you are dispatched on loads that may not be done legally unless you're working on your break.
HOS has many flaws but Congress or FMCSA are never going to consider changes until we're all under strict compliance and they have access to big data.

Just hope your friendly neighborhood DOT officer doesn't look too close at your logs.

    I have a ?
If you are on a customers property, can you not move trailers around at any speed, indefinitely, and that is all registered on line 4? Customer also has a yard you may park in to take necessary break afterwards. (Before you re enter public road way) Or can I get a violation for going on line 3 even though I am on private property..?

Once you hit the magic number the ELD will automatically go to line 3. You may have to edit (correct) the log later, but you will need to notate the log. You will also need to keep a copy of the original log and the corrected copy. The ELD should allow you to do this.

The only other option is to log off the ELD.

Some ELDs keep track of unlogged driving miles, which certain people have an annoying habit of seeking explanations for.

So at road side am I busted?
I was under the impression line 3 may not be edited. I would think in this case it should be edited onto line 4. ?

If the truck stops moving for 3 seconds then the ELD thinks you are stopped. Line 3 cannot be edited, you are correct. So if on roadside, then it would place you on line 4.

Unlike with paper the ELD is more restrictive as what can/cannot be done. This is due to the fact that this has to be coded into a computer.

Okay .... my question is still:
If I am on customer property, or if I work for a carrier that has a large yard where speed will exceed 5 mph, is this a "driving beyond 11/14 limits" violation?? Is there a way to record this time which is all on private property as line 4 rather than line 3? Will one officer say I broke the law by driving beyond the limits and the next will let me be?
