My dad, who passed years ago drove for 39 years, retiring in 1992. He was a teamster all those years and drove what today would be called NE regional. He retired comfortably between Social Security and his pension. The real kind. No the 401k BS they try to make sound as if you will get the same result. He always said deregulation ruined the trucking industry. That is why we have .33 per mile druving jobs. It also ruined the airline industry but that is another story.

When I was a kid I was exploring in some drawers at our house and found his W2 from 1968. He made $32,000 that year. Almost 50 years ago now. It didn't mean anything to me when I saw it but it sure tells a lot now.

I also heard on a radio show recently that before deregulation the average truck driver made the equivalent of $110,000 in today's dollars.

But hey, at least everything is super cheap at Walmart.

Nothing has really become "cheaper" it's just the quality has gone way down the price more or less does not really change much when adjusted for inflation.

    JOHNQPUBLIC Thanks this.

Had a bowl of ice cream. Carton is now only 1.5 at. They made the cartons more sleek and modern looking rounding off the corners thinking the dumb consumer wouldnt notice but all they really have done is reduce said package size, the 1/2 gallon size is long history.

Depends, was he an owner/operator? Like he said, "Teamster" back when that meant something. It wasn't unusual for people in the 50's-60's to pay cash for a modest house on an above average income, today that would be the range of the 1% (and a majority of the people that COULD pay cash for a reasonable house, instead mortgage massive McMansions in overheated real estate markets! Just 'cause they're rich, don't make them smart!)

It does seem like the older generation had no trouble buying 1-2 houses, a boat and an RV on a "middle class" income.

No, not an owner operator. Always company driver. But like I said he was a teamster back in the day when it really meant something. We did have a Cadillac convertible when I was a kid and my mother did not work.

When he retired in 1992 at the age of 62 he began collecting his pension & social security. I was 22 then and just getting started in my career field so I was at the lower end of the salary range. For a few years my dad was making more retired than I was working. Times sure have changed, definately for the worse if you are a working / middle class poerson.

Think about it, all of this cost cutting, trimming benefits, doing away with pensions and selling everyone on the 401k scam etc... Who has it helped? Only the rich and the large corporations. The general financial state of our society has gone way down in my opinion.

    Still undecided Thanks this.
