Is it a better option than the mileage/percentage?
-
The answer is more based upon personality than facts.
The Company will do what is in the best interest of the Company.
If you're salaried, they'll run you hard enough that you say "Man, if I were mileage-based, I'd get more money."
If you're Mileage-based, the slow-freight drags will cause you to say "Man, I'd make more money if I were salaried..."bucksandducks Thanks this. -
I looked at the salary and had to make a choice. Can I live on this salary for the next two years? I took a cut of over $10,000 a year to get into trucking. I realized that my family could survive on the new salary Roehl was offering. I felt it would make my chances of surviving in trucking better if money was not the main. Even though I could make more on some weeks being paid by the mile, I like the peace of mind the salary has. Now if you can't live on the salary then you best try the mileage paid option. At the end of the two years of salary you can then decide your future. You will have 2 years experience and can probably find a good paying local job or stay on with Roehl and be making .38 a mile.

Thanks guys, real good point there with how the company may choose to operate you. EaS I have a good paying job, but the last couple years have been pretty bad so I can justify making a switch at least in the short term. I'm going to give them a call again and get some more info. Thanks.

When I was salary, I was lazy. They still give you the same amount of time to get places. You'll just be likely to sit less without a load. They can't run the crap out of you because you are still bound my legal constraints. It let me be a mediocre driver since it didn't matter if I got some place early and got another load. I'd get paid the same, so I'd just take my time getting around. Now that I run mileage, I run my butt off getting from Point A to Point B. Best believe I am calling my DSR with an updated ETA too, so they can plan accordingly.

Also, salary is good if you need to know what your paycheck will be every time. If you don't have a lot of bills or have a military retirement check, mileage may be better. It's personal preference. Theres no temptation to run illegal on salary either since it doesn't matter how many miles you run a week. I kept track of what I would make on mileage and never once did it equal more than what I made on salary.

Thanks Rusty.
