Just because the mandate is delayed or done away with does NOT mean you cannot still run your precious elogs. It simply means I won't have to. They work for you. Congradulations. They don't work for everybody, though, and create new problems for a lot of people. For example, my truck was designed and built before vehicles were "connected". The ECM has no firewalls or other security measures in place because it was assumed that anyone with access to it was sitting in the truck hard wired in. Now're DEMANDING that I open a door for hackers? The only totally secure option on the market (no internet, cellular, or bluetooth connection) costs the same as 36 years worth of paper logs. Is it going to last 36 years? How long until the govermnent updates the definition of what an ELD must do and it no longer meets the bureaucratic definition? Even if I go with the peoplenet system the company is using and will supply, after 18 months of paying for the bare minimum level of service, I would've been better off buying the other system. Costs add up quickly, and I've only got one truck. Spending this extra money does nothing for me, and it does nothing for my business. The only thing it does is take money away from things I'd like to do with it.
But getting back to the security aspect, suppose you pick up a high-dollar load, or a highly sensitive load, or any such load that would be desireable for hijackers to take. "Don't stop for 250 miles after pickup" becomes a moot point when all they have to do is push a button remotely and your truck shuts off. Or perhaps it is just somebody wanting to post a video to Youtube, so they ease in behind you as you start down the mountain...then they open up your throttle. Got an automatic? They are running that up through the gears, too. You've got 80,000 pounds AND your engine pushing you down the mountain...your brakes don't stand a chance. Been nice knowing you. "Can't happen" you say? It can, and it has. If your vehicle has a cellular or internet connecion, it CAN be hacked. It has been done during controlled tests, so what makes you think it couldn't happen in an uncontrolled setting? Perhaps it already HAS (do you really believe all of those "runaway" Toyotas were because of the floor mats?)

Maybe you think the risks are acceptable...and you're free to make that choice. Nobody is trying to take that choice away from you. Maybe you don't mind being told how you must spend your money, either. All I am saying is that those of us who DON'T want to make the same choice as you shouldn't be forced to abide by YOUR choice. There are companies that will continue to run elogs whether the mandate is there or not. Choose to work for one of them if that is what you want to do. I'd rather keep my money in MY pocket and my truck secure. -
Why fight the clock?
....get paid by the hr work your 14 hr take your 10 off
.....Canadian trucking companies are already doing this please" wake up America " what is wrong with you ?
With today's technology paid by the mile is a thing of the pastx1Heavy Thanks this. -
Just because you like them, you can use them. What if I said I like having a driver facing camera, and there is a mandate coming, so I say I am not signing. I like it so why can't you?
I never drive my truck faster than 65 mph. So when a mandate comes around I will remember to say "I am fine with 65. So you can be too." Not giving any thought to maybe you live out west where faster than that has worked for this long. Come on, pull your head out of the sand.BoostedTeg, Red379, dunchues and 3 others Thank this. -

And making more money on E-Logs is a head scratchershogun Thanks this. -
I love when people claim they make more money on elogs. Always forget to include the real difference, perhaps changed companies where one was poorly run compared to a well run outfit, maybe previously did live loading and unloading and now are doing all drop and hook, etc. The only argument which is minor at best is saying you get a little bit more from your 70 if you are able to save a few minutes here and there say fuel in 9 minutes rather than record it as 15.
@crappiejunkie
Yes elog is just a tool. No different than many other tools we use daily. My point is I will use mine, and I do not care if you want to use the same tools I use. Just don't tell me what tools I must use when the ones I have work just fine. Let it be my choice is the root of my argument. I will still do my best to not infringe on your or anyone else's choices. It would be nice if more would quit this crap thinking of "I know what's best for you."W9onTime Thanks this. -
I once saw a ton of trucks parked in the mountains. They never park there. But this time they ran out of hours because a tanker managed to slam his tank inside the truck. And shut down 4 of 5 lanes.
Another instance would be heading to vegas and having to take the LONG way because the freeway just washed out. I think it was an extra 80 miles roughly that added over 2 hours depending on your horsepower rating. Because it's a lot of ups and downs.W9onTime Thanks this. -
However, if the regs are going to be in place, elogs are better, imo.
