Threads like this are why the internet, bizarrely, is leading America back to the very useful concept of shame. Once upon a time people wouldn't take certain actions because they would lead to them being forcibly ejected from their community... At some point we, as a nation, decided that shame was bad for us.

Shame is a good thing. It has nothing to do with feeling guilty (aka the fear of being caught and shamed) and everything to do with real world consequences.

Bill is experiencing that right now. He has to pay everyone back loudly and publicly while scourging himself in public (the modern day version is making a large donation to a charity and performing community service) to get his reputation back to a point where he won't be internet stalked everywhere he goes and outed as a complete piece of ####. Shame.
