I've been a company driver since 1994. Every company I've worked for had a strict truck maintenance schedule AND A Full-fledged shop with almost 24 hour coverage. I'm not at that sort of place anymore. We have trucks, an office with a few desks & computers and not much more. What maintenance schedule should I follow with a brand new 2017 Freightliner? I now have 16k miles on my truck. Everything works as new and nothing has broken or needed service yet. If I get a PM done on the road how long is normal?
Thanks

Well, you are driving a soot monster, so I would change oil at least every 15,000 miles. Then we have the oil change procedure itself, change the oil first, run the truck, and then you can change the fuel filter. If you don't, you risk blowing the motor. There is a procedure for this, might want to look it up.
I would also educate yourself on the emission system. Right now, you know about as much as the mechanic at Freightliner that will be working on it.RET423 Thanks this. -
Might help to know what truck it is and what your operation is like, look in the book that came with the truck or talk to your local dealer about it. As far as time it takes to get a PM done will depend on how busy thy are. Figure about an hour just for your truck to get done.

If you have an automatic the minimum interval is 50k. A lot of companies do it at 70k.
Changing oil before the recommended intervals is a complete waste of money.tscottme Thanks this. -
I'm a company driver, I know what I can read on the dashboard and my dispatch. I'm NOT doing any of the maintenance. I just need to know when maintenance is due or overdue so I can demand someone else do whatever they do. Thanks

What do I need to now about the emission system? I've driven a DEF truck since 2012. All I've ever been required to know is NEVER let the DEF run out and give the truck to the shop when certain dash lights stay on.

I mentioned in the 1st post it's a 2017 Freightliner. It's also an automatic. I've driven it since new (500 miles on it when I got it). It now has 16k miles. All I've done is top off the engine oil once, add fuel and DEF, change a fuse for something in the cab.

If you got it new, then the manual should still be there. Read the section on maintenance intervals.
You'll need 1st overhead between 60k -100k. DEF filter is around 100k or 150k.
There really isn't that much maintenance involved with the newer Freightliners.tscottme Thanks this. -
Well, drive it for 70,000 miles than change the oil. Why even ask? Good luck.

Oil changes at 50,000, filters at 25,000 I believe.
Seems excessively long to me, but that's the recommended interval.tscottme Thanks this.
