Just wait until you run highway 16 from Hinton down to Tête Jaune and then take 5 south. Some nights I've driven it there is only a 12 foot swath plowed straight down the middle of the roads. The plowed portion has 2" of snow already built up and the unplowed portion has 6+ inches of snow. Of course everyone wants to be in the plowed portion so you're dodging pretty much every vehicle coming at you.

Having a tenth of the population kind of heavily contributes to the lack of infrastructure maintenance. But the major contributing factor to the condition of our roads is higher gross/axle group weight maximums stressing the pavement and sharp contrast between winter and summer temperatures causing heaves.
Also, on the topic of weight, there is a much lower amount of enforcement present on the roads, leading to more opportunities to run overweight.
