Funny you ask this...

I was at a CB shop that was owned and operated by an old timer who might I add has a nice array of very old CB radios in his shop....along side of base stations and mobiles starting with old Cobra 23 channels on up to some of the newer models.

Anyways guy has a lot of old 23 channels he sells, I ask "who would buy a 23 channel when you have 40 channels on the market for next to nothing?"

His response: "Farmers....they buy them for their tractors....and they only need (I forgot which 2 channels....I want to say 15 and 19 I don't remember) and they don't want them stolen". I guess CB radio theft is pretty common, so they get the ones no one really wants.

So farmers use them. I have one in my pick up truck because a friend gave me my first 2 free, and while moving from NC to MO it came in handy for passing the time striking up a conversation with whoever while on the interstate plus I could get traffic reports and bear reports. That's how I got hooked.

It seems CB clubs vanished long ago, but I hear some country boys like them, for whatever reason.

I also believe 4 wheel drive owners like them for when they get stuck in the ruts or something.

 

I off road a good deal and we use CB's not only to get help when stuck, but to communicate trail conditions to the boys with "less capable" trucks. They are a great tool. I don't drive yet but I have the CB for the trail rides and I have found that it is the best radar detector money can buy.
