The school requires me to have my CDL B permit first before they can do anything. They'll show me how to drive a bus and take me to the test with their vehicle. This is at my pace and no longer than a month. Although I don't want to drive a bus since I plan on going to the oilfield instead, is $900 to get my CDL B a good deal?

I paid $3,500 for my school to get my Class A. $900 sounds reasonable to me. Good luck brother

seems like a very good deal. just make sure you ask the school that IF you should happen to fail the DMV road test, how much will they charge you for taking the vehicle a second time!

They likely use the bus so you can also get your passenger endorsement just in case you ever need it.... Matter of fact while I was in school one of our instructors needed there they got the permit for it so was able to drive while a class b or a driver with endorsement was in the seat closest to front. Most of the time it was just another instructor but a few times one of the students that had been a school bus driver had to be up there now this is a driver with 20+ year tractor trailer experience requiring a lady without any to watch him drive a 16(?) Passenger bus. We gave him he'll over that one

Is it easy to transition from B to A just in case? Is it just a matter of having a truck and demonstrate to the MVA that I can operate the truck or what? I was told once by a guy that I could just rent a Penske truck and take it to the MVA. Does the truck actually need to have a cargo trailer or just the truck itself?

Also, isn't CDL B more sought out in the oil field trucking industry than CDL A?

Just FYI, if that bus is an automatic transmission, you will have a restriction on your license restricting you to automatic transmission only. Things are different now. If you have that restriction, your cdl is basically worthless. People were doing that thing were they were taking the test in automatic trucks becuase they can’t shift gears properly and pass the test. Those days are gone. Also, if you take class a test with truck and tag along trailer, it will have a restriction saying “no semi trucks”. I have a class A cdl with no restrictions but never drive 18 wheelers. It is nice to have if you ever need it. Why would a class b be more sought after in oil field than a class A? Class A cdl is top dog license. It is not a easy transition to A in the sense that you have to retake the whole test over again and nknow how to navigate the truck for the examiner. Plus, you will need a truck of course. You can basically work anywhere. Hope this information helps you a little

i dont believe individuals can rent a penske truck, i believe that requires a DBA. even if an individual can rent a penske truck i dont believe they are going to rent it to you if all you have is a class B license with a restriction. something tells me, this would be an extremely difficult way to go. not to mention your not just going to drive a non-syncro shift transmission without any practice.

lately all i have driven is class B, but having a class A only makes sense.
