Yep, I live outside city limits though. I was working at Walmart in Eufaula and Walmart is a joke and they barely paid the bills. Lol

On Thursday we had our pretrip test, I got about a 95% which I was happy about, they were only asking for 70% for the second week. I got 100% on the air brakes test. For the rest of the day we did more backing skills practice.
Friday we went for a drive on the road until lunch then after lunch we had a choice of going back on the road or practice backing skills. There were more votes for backing skills, a few students needed more practice. Those of us who didn't need more practice were introduced to the 45 back. Which we did for the rest of the day.
Saturdays are half days so they are spent in the classroom. We had a hazmat class, more safety classes and the class for the truck pc.
For Monday (tomorrow) I was volunteered to do a skills challenge against the class a week ahead of us. That should be fun. And I'll let y'all know how it goes.
Until then, drive safe!
tinytim Thanks this. -
Is Keith Rake still there, he was an excellent instructor years ago.

I haven't heard the name.

Didn't get to do the skills challenge for some reason, maybe the weather? But for Monday, we did skills practice and then drive the route that is used for testing. Today I'm not sure what we are doing, so far we we're just told to hook up the trailer. All hooked up and pretrip is done, now just waiting on instructions. More pretrip in the meantime.

Has materials science come up with a lightweight flatbed tarp yet? Like say, under 50 pounds for a tarp that covers a full 53' load?
Tarping is the main thing that deters me---and most anybody else who shies away from flatbed I would guess---from the job. Everything else about it looks pretty great. I hauled straight-truck flatbed back in 1994 but there was no tarping involved. Just had to secure the load by ratcheting down the straps good and tight. It was my introduction to OTR...Tucson to Salt Lake and back once a week for an electroplating company called the Welin Company out of Tucson. They refurbished dinged-up hydraulic rods for the mining industry. -
We haven't had anything covering tarping yet. We get securement training next week after we get our CDL.

Thanks for the update on your progress. After thinking about it I'm pretty sure tarps are still heavy. Best of luck to you by the way. Newbie posts bring back the memories of when I first started out with Schneider tanker in 1994. Just like Roehl evidently is now, it was a good place to launch a career back then (and may still be).

Had CDL test today. I did everything perfect with the exception of someone cutting me off at a red light, I forgot the selector switch and stalled the truck. Instructor said it was impeding traffic, automatic failure. He went in to say that if there were no cars behind me then he would have overlooked it. So I have to wait until next Tuesday to retest. It sucks, but it is what it is. Tomorrow is securement training. I will update on that afterwards.

I'd like to apologize for not posting in a while. I did get my CDL on the next test date. After the first test date, we did securement training that Thursday and Friday, afterwards those who had passed their CDL were able to go home.
I went back to training on Monday and took the CDL test again on Tuesday. After we got back to the terminal I headed to the Airport to go home. Roehl did pay for my trip there, but they did not pay for my trip home. The only thing that was paid by them was AAA Shuttle from the hotel to a bus station that shuttles to the airport. That shuttle is $29. I have heard from others that are going into the program that Roehl is no longer paying for anything other than AAA Shuttle to and from the hotel due to people either not showing up, or leaving training early. To me, that is all understandable from a business point of view. Why would they pay for bus tickets or put out all that money for people to just leave early or not show up at all.
Overall the training was great and the trainers were awesome. If you didn't understand something, they literally had about 50 different ways to explain or show you.
On to later news... I'm a smoker, and there was a shortage of driver trainers that smoked as well. So I spent around 2 weeks at home before going with a trainer. I got home on the 7th or 8th of this month and just got picked up this past Sunday.
On Sunday I was picked up in Dothan, Al (30 mins from home) my trainer had a load going to Jacksonville, FL. I drove from Dothan to about 2 miles from Fl/Ga State line on I-75 where we parked for the night. Monday morning my trainer drove from there to Jacksonville. We got unloaded and had a load assignment in Hosford, FL (about 200 miles west of Jacksonville) I drove there, we got loaded. We strapped and tarped the load. (osb plywood) Once everything was good to go, I drove to Ozark, Al where we parked again at Loves for showers and sleep. We woke up this morning, I drove to Birmingham, Al where we fueled and continued driving north. From there, I drove to about 30 mins from Nashville, TN and took my 30 minute break. Now my trainer is driving for a bit.
Sorry for such a long post, but I needed to get everything on here up to date.
More to come tomorrow. I have about 17 days left with a trainer.
