I took my test 2 days ago. I passed the Pre-trip and skills but failed the driving for impeding traffic. One mistake cost me my license. Luckily I have another shot at it next Tuesday and I'm confident I'll pass. My question for all you guys and gals is this. What is a " TRACTOR TRAILER EMERGENCY BRAKE"? This was a question by the examiner during my pre-trip. I had to repeat it back to him 4 times just to get some time to think about what it was. I finally just pointed to the Tractor Brakes and he accepted my answer. I totally guessed. This was never something we went over in school and wasn't in any of the books we read either.
There were a number of different names we learned for each of the 4 brake controls but never " TRACTOR TRAILER EMERGENCY BRAKE". I asked one of the instructors after the test and he just gave me a look like .. HUH? I believe the State Official was just messing with me and I probably could of pointed to any of the 4 brakes and he would have accepted it. What do you guys think?
Oh.. and before I forget the examiner who I had for Pre-Trip was an absolute jerk. Rude, disrespectful and raised his voice more then once for no reason. As soon as I got in the cab he was yelling. I wonder why he felt the need to act this way? Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read my post..

He was just messing with your head.
The bad news is lots of people are going to mess with your head lol.
The worse news is that once your out here trucking, just like you stated " One mistake cost me my license."
Trucking is all about good decision making, and basics. You have to make good decisions every minute of every day. If you don't, you won't be in this game for long.
And as far as emergencies go with braking, it's all about speed control. When your rolling thunder and your heavy, there's no emergency braking, there's only what your going to squash. So it's really about speed control and following distance, and expecting the unexpected.CrappieJunkie and GetonwithiT Thank this. -
They are basically the same as your spring brakes. The tractor protection valve will pop the trailer valve (red knob) if your air pressure drops below 40 or so psi...and if pressure continues to drop, the tractor's spring brakes will come on when the yellow knob pops out. That's the closest thing you have to "emergency" brakes. In an actual emergency, your service brakes (foot pedal) will stop you quicker. Why? Because you can apply over 100 psi of air pressure (or whatever is in your tanks) to the service brakes and have braking force at every wheel. The spring brakes are located on the 2 trailer axles and only 1 (on most trucks) or MAYBE 2 (heavier spec'd trucks) drive axles, and are overcome by 40-60 psi of air pressure, which means that's pretty much the extent of their application force. There won't be ANY brakes applied at the steers or 1/2 your drive axles (if you only have parking brakes on 1 axle) using the spring brakes. In other words, a typical truck will have service brakes on all 5 axles, but spring brakes will only be found on 3.
