I favor the ECWS Gen III. I have plenty left over from a past life. Any additional I need I grab from the AAFES, but you can find them on Amazon and military surplus stores.
Silk weight base layer under my work uniform is the first stage. Temps below 20 gets the waffle bottoms as well. I'm wearing a cheap uniform coat over a liner from an old Columbia coat, otherwise I would go full waffle wear.
If you are in and out of the truck, wear the gear and turn down the heat in the cab. 50 or so in the cab is comfy when you are dressed for work in 15 and will keep you from getting sweaty.

After explaining it went against the skin he became a believer.WesternPlains Thanks this.

Question: Since Bass Pro recently bought Cabelas, does anyone know if and clothing lines are being dropped in favor of consolidating with another line?
I ask because Cabellas had a line that I liked and Bass Pro had a line that I liked. One of them had Redhead (Bass Pro I think) and forget the name of the other. I like the Redhead short sleeve pocketed T's with added touches that make more presentable than a most basic T-shirts
But I do like my carharrt cotton shirts, especially their heavy cotton pullover long sleeves, (with button top and one pocket). They're thick and durable cotton, very warm without being uncomfortably hot if it warms up, and they wash and wear well, don't need special handling and retain their color well.
Wear a thin undershirt (next smaller size) under them and I'm good without a coat or jacket well down below freezing. Wearing cheap cotton t-shirts under warm outer wear always greatly extends their useful lifeLast edited: Aug 11, 2017

Carhartt bibbs, the best ones they make forget what their called and a hoody with my company jacket over so I can get that dirty instead of my clothes.
I don't bust the bibbs out unless it's below 0 or else I get too sweaty. I don't stand outside much these days. When I'm dumping def it has to be somewhere heated like a garage. -
So far I’ve only had loads and been in warm climates. Actually looking forward to some crispy winter mornings and clean air.

I would be interested in people who wear wool in humid cold. Like the Gulf Coast. It should work real good. Otherwise, that wet cold soaks to the bone. Hate it.
I'd like to put in a suggestion for Carhart's Extreme Wear. When I first bought it. They called it Arctic Wear. It is black. Cordura Nylon Shell is the secret. Surprisingly thin. But it works. A literal winter guantlet. When I first got mine. Both Jacket, and bib overalls. I stood with my back to a 30 below wind chill and laughed at it. I couldn't believe that stuff worked that good. This stuff is also water repellent. It's not a rain coat. But will take a good amount of water. Don't have to worry about snow getting all over it. Won't soak in.
You can unzip the side pant leg of the coveralls. Makes it better for when it warms up. The jacket, is good up to about 50. Then need to take it off.
Believe me. I've worked through 7 winters here. Elevations as high as 5k feet. We get it bad. I believe in that Extreme Wear, big time.
I also wear 1200 gram insulated boots. Got sick and tired of my feet getting cold.
Also.... get rubber coated gloves. Good for liquids. Yes, insulated. Have gloves that don't allow your hands to get wet. It's a big deal.Lepton1, IluvCATS and hoosiergirl Thank this. -
I grew up in the fridged north and drive ltl in the Twin Cities area. I also use Walls for coat and bibs and have for years, and seems to hold up just fine. Make sure you layer, base(under armor or long johns)...mid(sweat shirt and jeans)...and outer(walls). I always wear my base and mid in the truck during bad weather and keep the cab cool. This also helps with keeping the windshield from icing over from using to much defroster. This base and mid layers usually work year round but for those -20 windchills I’ll throw on my outer layer...or two. I wear uninsulated Red Wings and layer wool socks accordingly. Use travel sized PEET dryers overnight.

If it's cold enough. Another thing to try. Don't use the defroster. Use heat, but not on defrost. You'd be surprised how well it works. But not when it's warmer and wet/ice/snow.... no good.
Yup.... I is a glorified expert...
Singlescrew and Lepton1 Thank this. -
I’m a wimp compared to you guys. I grew up in the mild climates of Seattle, WA.

Me too. We only had to worry about idiots that believed the SUV commercials.WesternPlains Thanks this.
