I just checked out Schugel. On their site they promote:

Choose an excellent CDL School -
We will give you $3600.00 in Tuition Assistance!

Choose a school from those listed below and J&R Schugel will help you pay tuition! After 1 month of solo driving you receive $300 per month for 12 months ($3600.00 total).

And Pinellas Technical Center is on their list. Thanks again for the good lead on a school and a company.

That looks like a really good school. At a really good price. Congrats.
My school is only 240 hours. And it's $4K. I admit, I got a Federal Grant to pay for it. All but $500. Not sure I'd even take up an offer from a company to pay that. I just want to get things going.
I'm older, like you. Geesh... the age discrimination is awful. Can work miracles for them. They don't care. One look and it's no.
I've been looking deeply into everything I'm doing. You can be assured you're making a good choice. Age discrimination is the opposite in trucking. Just talked to a rep about this. He was kinda quiet. Seemed worried. When I told him I'm 57. His answer was: "Oh Gee! You're young!" .... You ain't got nothin' to worry about as far as discrimination, bud. Good Luck!

Many LTL companies have dock-to-driver programs. You start on the dock, move to a hostler, go out with city drivers, and basically get all the training you need to get your CDL--while being paid! Check with FedEx Freight, UPS Freight, Saia, ABF, Estes or Old Dominion and see if they have a dock position open and whether they have this program available.

Furthermore, LTL is where the real money is for company drivers. I wouldn't go back to OTR for anything.

wfutch quit driving, but it wasn't because of Schugel. He had a good experience working there overall.
