If I didn't get my cdl from them, then I dont need to sign a contract. The 13 months is just if I went through TDA or swift in AZ and they paid for the training up front....

So when do you hit the road?

I leave thursday or friday, just waiting for my mentor to get back from LA. Maybe Im thinking of another post but I thought you were being funded to get your cdl from someone else? if thats the case, couldnt you take it to swift and not sign a contract? bada bing, you get in and get good equipment at the least, and if you dont like it, bail out :). They'd make you run 6 weeks with a mentor still I think, like myself, since its a fresh cdl. Although, may runs some brand new peterbilts...350 series i think...awesome!

oh, I almost forgot, if you have AIM or something, I can answer any other swift questions you have that I might know, since the recruiters at tda are pretty much in the dark, you can hit me up at; jfonseca86 on AIM,

I have aim, I dont use it too much... not like i use to anyways.... LOL

Well keep me and us posted.. I really want to know how the mentor driving goes....

The school im going through is funded by the county of sac education. But I put my work in with foodlink and drive there trucks.

I get 6 weeks class room, 6 weeks pad training along with some warehouse stuff. DUring the second 6 weeks I get my skills,pre-trip and driving test. The last 3rd is doing runs local or anywhere from the oregon border to bakersfield. after that I am on my own.

GTI doesnt consider the school accredited, so they wouldnt validate the training there. But as long as I have my CDL and 6 months exp im good. May does hire from foodlink, along with swift, werner and a few others.

Hi, I have been thinking of going the foodlink route. But 18 weeks is a long time for a guy broke as a joke. I called and asked them if they had any jobs onsite and was told no, but that training is from like 8 - 4:30 M-F. I guess I could try to get a job outside those hours but with how the economy is I doubt it.

My back is so hard against the wall I can pull bricks out with my but cheeks!

You can find trucking jobs in your area if you think outside of the box. Down load TRUCKING COMPANIES for your area. Do not down load trucking jobs. Then you can go through the list and weed out the ones you know will not work. Then you set out and go talk to them in person. Once you find a company you really like and it meets most of your goals you keep going to them. If they say they do not hire without experience then ask them if they know of a company you could go to to gain the experience so you can eventually get on with them. That shows them you're really interested in their company and they just might start thinking you might be a good asset. Stay away from recruiters. Use the computer but DO NOT depend on it 100%. You need to get out there and look.

Any one looking for a school in SoCal - Stay away from Skyway Trucking

This school has old trucks and they break down a lot. One truck was down for 3 weeks. Owner is very unwilling to fix the problem. Only one truck is used for DMV as the others would not pass DOT inspection. Trainers are very bad and seem unwilling to teach. This school will take your money and waste your time.

Swift is not a bad starter company as I did my first yr with them. They for one will not charge you for idleing your truck to keep warm or cool. That should be a consideration for any one now adays..

I live in SoCal, got my CDL in Nov, and hired on with Swift on 11/20/08. I just finished my 6 week training and do my second road test tomorrow, then I should have a truck next week. (4 ppl ahead of me). The training pay stinks, but if you can survive, it should be nothing but better from there.
BTW, I went to an outside school vs the Swift school..
