@1951 ford i remembered this thread that was posted not too long ago. @wore out had a few good tips on there. Here it is

Cracked axle housing.

I guess it depends how bad it is and the crack not spidered out.

 

I've never heard of it being a issue. No personal experience since my trucks are to old for low air leaf. I did alot of research when that block cracked and metal stitching always won out for the preferred fix. Trying to weld contaminated cast usually doesn't turn out well. Personally I'd swap housings.

 

I have seen it quite a bit. Bushings out in the front of spring or u-bolts loose are the cause. They got to be bad before I will replace one. A little vee with a grinding rock and some heat will get the oil to run back. It's not near as bad as it sounds

 

I don't think those axle housings are cast to be honest. I tossed a couple old SSHD rears in the scrap pile recently and they were 2 pieces of stamped steel plate that were welded together.

 

My 91 had a million and 50k. I bought it a year ago to replace a 359 that I wrecked. I knew the motor was bad when I bought it, but it was everything I like as far as B model CAT, 5YG 460 hp peec converted to manual. 15 over and 3.36 rears in 402 housings on low air leaf. I figured I wasn't gonna find another one that clean and straight with a better motor lol. I doubt I will make 800 when it's back in business (hopefully Sunday) but it should be stout nuff to put a smile on your face when you mash on it

Yeah they are steel. I was referring to welding a engine block. I thought maybe stitching work for this too. Probably didn't word that very well.

 

I was just ribbing ya. I hate it, seems every exit ramp I need to take is Closed for Construction.

 

Thanks for the input and the link, fellas. I told him he would need to pull the rear out so I could turn it over and burn the oil out of the crack. Otherwise, I wouldn't guarantee it for a foot (he wanted to do it on the truck). Being that they're steel makes the welding easier. I was originally going to TIG it, and I may still do that, depending on how bad it's cracked.
