YRC and their affiliates (USF Holland, Reddeway, New Penn) hire new students. So does ODFL. I think ABF does as well. Estes, FedEx Freight have dock to driver programs. They all basically will have some sort of apprenticeship where you can move from the docks to a Yard Jockey or P&D Driver (City Driver) and Linehaul. R+L, XPO, Saia, UPSF (maybe), A DUI Pyle, etc. etc. You can also give them a call or walk into the terminal and ask in person. You'll need Hazmat, Doubles/Triples, and Tanker endorsements (for liquid or gas containers).

Great question. By the way, ABSOLUTE Kudos on getting all your endorsements before looking for a job.

Tankers often haul Hazmat loads. Customers pay more to haul them, therefore you are likely to be paid more.

Flatbedders also haul loads that require Hazmat and tanker endorsements. These will be "totes" of liquid Hazmat. Each tote may contain about 500 gallons. Flatbed also has the added benefit of physical labor and thinking through the whole process of loading, securement, etc.

Either way you will be a quantum leap ahead of the usual newbie pulling a dry van.

Pulling tankers, especially smooth bore without baffles, will train you in a hurry how to shift SMOOTHLY, so you don't get overpowering surge. In a smooth bore the surge is really something to experience.

 

Tanker is a great option for regional work.

I’ve pulled flat, dry, tanks, double tanks, double flats and I got the most respect and money pulling hazmat tanks. That is my recommendation.
