This week and next week, I am hauling local runs for one broker. $900/day for 360 miles on my Odometer taking pickup trucks and various equipment from customer yard to auction. I am using a stepdeck trailer. Half of the miles are loaded and empty the other half.
As for my Emission issues, I spent over $10K on it. Truck went into shop around 10 times in 5 months until I finally resolve the issue. -
To clarify about the rates quoted above, my rates are the one on my rate confirmation sheet from broker when a load is book. My carrier takes 10% and I get 90%. I have been leased on to carriers that want 38% to 25% of the booked rate even though it is a brokered load. On many of these carriers, they broker the load from their inhouse broker before giving you your share. This is the main reason why some carriers paying their O/O's percentage pay only gross to the truck $1.10/ mile on 75% with a direct customer. How it work is shipper pay carrier, then carrier assign the load to their in house broker. Then, the carrier book the load from their broker at a reduce rate and take their 25% cut leaving you the broker or double broker portion. In reality, they take way more.
A carrier that have direct customer should get way more than $2/mile compared to a carrier that get loads from loadboard on Vans and opendeck freight. Yet many Carriers are paying contractors less than $1.25 per mile on percentage pay.
Only workaround this is to lease to a carrier that either get real direct freight and gives you your fair share, or takes a lower cut. Or, get your own authority.MikeinReno Thanks this. -

$10k on emission issues in 4 to 5 month period is not too bad considering it was in the shop 10 times on emission issues. It could of cost much more if I took it to the big dearlerships. Perhaps I could of have less trips to shops if I went straight to Freightliner. But I seriously doubt it since there were many sensors and DEF related issues. Mostly likely, Freightliner would charge me $2000 to flush my DEF system and do a 4 hour force Regen and say work complete. Then charge me $3000 on next trip on swapping NOX sensors and claim they gave me a huge discounts because the sensors were $900 on parts alone and they spent a lot of time troubleshooting (3 to 4 hour force Regen is required each time shop troubleshoot DEF/DPF according to Detroit Diesel trouble shooting guide.) Then want another $3000 to change more sensors and DEF pump, and Injector nozzle, Then want $15k to replace The One Box because they have replace many of the components so it must be The One Box. This was the order of things done to my truck for the most part. Except, I didnt replace The One Box and the shops I went to charges me much less. These emission trucks are a nightmare when they act up. Everyday, I cross my fingers and pray that no new Emission Error codes light up on my dashboard when I start the engine. -

I bought a 2004 Freightliner Columbia with 700k on it. Have put about 6k in repairs in to it over the past four months and am having an inframe on it this week. I'm like you Johnnyman, I cross my fingers each day and hope for a good week. When the truck is running good, it generates really good income. But as you said, downtime is tough!
