We're hoping to have a bathroom by Thanksgiving. It's only 6 blocks over to the shop, or across the street to the convenience store, but it is aggravating to have to stop and leave. Our other "luxury", we're not trying to live in it while we work.
If I had any advice to offer anyone thinking about a project like this, it would be triple your project details. Timeline, expectations of what you think you'll find, budget, etc. When you do things correctly, including unplanned things you uncover as you go, it will always add more time, materials and labor than you originally planned on.
The other lesson I learned, If you think for one second you may rip it out and replace it, just do it. We tried to save money by saving a wall here and ceiling there only to rip it out later. Hindsight is always 20/20. If we'd have just gutted it, we'd be moved in by now.
Just some thoughts from my adventure.4mer trucker, Logan76, Feedman and 3 others Thank this. -
Oh how I remember views like that. The other thing we ran into, they used 8' studs + the top and bottom plates. Our walls all have a filler strip along the bottom since 4' drywall didn't make it all the way down. I guess with plaster and lathe, it didn't matter, just throw another strip at it.4mer trucker, Logan76, Tug Toy and 1 other person Thank this.

Ok, I made it back out of IOWA. Dropped my uncle at the house and spent the night last night. Now in Circleville OH for delivery in the morning.
I have been using my ELD since wendsday last week. So far so good. I will be on recap starting tomorrow, as I didn't get my 34 this weekend. So other than having to figure that out this week (1/2 paper 1/2 ELD ) no fuss so far.
Oh and I had to PARK for the WHOLE 30 min today Where I usually just sneak out after 20 min or so.G13Tomcat, 4mer trucker, Logan76 and 7 others Thank this. -
We started with one room. Tore out the plaster and put up drywall. Was gonna save the ceiling but it was done on two foot centers with 1/2 inch drywall so I ended up ripping it out and doing it right.
I didn't want this to turn into a forever project so we tore it all down to the studs. I had the downstairs all roughed in and the bathroom downstairs in before I tore out the upstairs. Tore out the kitchen in one day and set it back up in the basement. Setup our living room in where our office is now so we could keep it contained behind plastic. I removed all the doorways between the rooms. Took a little over a year and the kids and wife slept in the basement for about two weeks. I was working nights and slept at my parents for a week while I had a couple guys tape the drywall. At that point we needed to get it done and that was the only help I hired for the inside.
Living in a construction zone gets old fast but I'm glad we did it. I have seen so many people that spend a lifetime remodeling and get it done about the time the kids all leave.4mer trucker, Logan76, 1951 ford and 5 others Thank this. -

I hired the sewer done (all new) and the drywall finishing done. Everything else, we're doing ourselves.
We were going to do the kitchen, bath and laundry and move in and do the rest as we went. I'm glad we didn't. While it would be nice to have it gone, we didn't have to be in a rush to sell our current house. -
