ANY robot is ONLY as good as the person(s) who programmed it. If they don't account for EVERY variable, that becomes evident when those "unforeseen circumstances" (like a truck backing into a dock) occur and the vehicle defaults to shut-down status because "if I'm not moving, it isn't my fault!" Then, after pulling into a truck's blind spot AND STOPPING, without sounding a horn or in any other way attempting to gain the other driver's attention to its presence, the autonomous vehicle causes a wreck it isn't "technically" responsible for, because "it performed as expected." Well, in a world FULL of unexpected surprises, it is no place for programmed responses. What might work great in a controlled environment where everything plays by the rules and nothing out of the ordinary occurs, quickly finds trouble when the rule book is tossed out the window and the real world hits it square on the bumper. It would be IMPOSSIBLE to anticipate every possible situation to develop a pre-programmed response, and to do that would require a file so large the lag between the sensors picking up on what's happening and sorting through the billions and billions of possible solutions to select the "right" one would cause even more problems. You cannot program instinctive responses.

The only advantage to autonomous vehicles is the lack of distraction of the operator. That is easy enough to overcome, but it won't be popular. First, you'd have to make driving more physically demanding. Things like power steering and automatic transmissions would have to be scrapped. When you NEED both hands to drive, you'll USE both hands to drive. Eliminate cruise control, requiring the driver to constantly monitor his speed...keep his mind in the game, so to speak. Lastly, scrap the air bags and crumple zones. Stupid ought to hurt. If it did, less people would be willing to be stupid. When you have crumple zones absorbing the impact and airbags cusioning your stop, there is no reason to try NOT to be stupid. Besides, your insurance has "accident forgiveness" so your rates won't even go up. Your biggest penalty right now is that you get another new car...but that's more like rewarding stupidity, which only encourages it.

The word 'Robot' came from a play that was written in 1920. It is about artificial people that rise up and kill the human race.
