Doable, in some cases outside Intermodal, (which begs the question, Why are you in the Intermodal section)...but still, there are plenty of OTR O/O not doing that OR, doing that by staying out 2+ weeks (which makes no sense to me).

My first 18 months in Intermodal I was averaging 4K per week, home every night....then the bottom fell out, rates went to crap and exports almost came to a standstill....now rates are coming back...(at a decent clip too)...my guess is, by this time next year...we all might be singing a different tune (for the better). Trucking (like the economy in general) is ciclical......

4NoReason, several of us (I know I did) told you NOT to get a newer truck...the thread is still here somewhere, new truck are just far more expensive to maintain than the pre '07 ones. But, understand, even then, your buying a USED piece of COMMERCIAL equipment. the first two years you WILL have constant breakdowns,.....

I agree that you can do ok. I came from having my own authority as did several of the drivers I work with. We pretty much all agree that brokers are the scum of the earth and let someone else deal with their slimy #####. It was just a ton of work having to book loads, drive, and do all the paperwork. Is the money better, yes, but at what cost? I just show up and they tell me what they need me to do now. A lot less stress and I sleep in my bed overnight with my wife.

If it's a rail Chasis I drop where it says on J1 unless the lift is there doing lift offs, then I'll get it lift and go drop chassis on other side... And I don't let any of them operator talk to me like I'm a piece of trash... I'd give it right back to them who do they think they are?

I was banned from there till I took a safety class one time. But letting another man belittle you is a whole different animal. I understand they gotta deal with a lot of ignorant drivers, but I treat people how I wanna be treated and expect the same in return.

Track 9 is always a lift off unless told to drop it by crane operator or unless there's no cranes there.......

You don't ever have to let them talk to you like that, if they diss cuss you out, call dispatch, leave the line open and tell them to call the yardmaster.....if your doing exactly what your ticket says, you did nothing wrong and it's their problem.....always keep your cool.

in all honesty, it comes down to three things. intermodal isnt the greatest gig but i'll tell you what, right outfit with decent money coming in and your humble, you're set. ((my opinion - may differ for others)).
