Vermont treasurer wants gas tax for road infrastructure

MONTPELIER, Vt. ' Vermont Treasurer Jeb Spaulding wants to increase the state tax on motor fuels as a way to pay for bridge projects.

A report by Spaulding says the 5-cent-a-gallon tax would raise $20 million a year and help reduce a backlog of needed bridge repairs and replacement.

The Vermont Agency of Transportation estimates the state needs between $900 million and $1.1 billion over the next 10 years to meet its bridge construction goals.

Spaulding says his proposal would cover a bonding package that would raise about $150 million for new projects.

Transportation Secretary David Dill says in favor of finding new revenue for the ailing transportation budget, but a tax would hurt the average Vermonter.
