When I was a kid and just getting started, I would take my mom with me to the Kenworth dealer to sit in the new (at that time it was new) W900. They will let you sit in just about any truck on the lot. If mom wasnt there, I would have probably caught wood. My dream was to own a W900L (the "L" stands for Largecar).

When you get behind the wheel of a truck and adjust the seat and mirrors, have someone take a picture of you. Always keep that picture. You will notice that alot of people in the trucking biz are killjoys and losers. They will try to tell you what you can and cannot do, what's possible and what's impossible, and what's best for you. Two things I want you to remember: 1.) They don't know YOU 2.) YOU have no limits. You can do anything you set your mind to. So, if you want to drive, make your mind up and go do it. Rock and roll.

Was sitting in the WaffleHouse this morning. Sun was starting to come up. This girl walks in, black coat, ball cap, jeans and flat shoes. She nods at me and turns to sit down.

    I say to her, "You're a fighter."

She looks surprised, "How do you know?"

"You're up on your toes. And you're too tall for a gymnast and too built for a ballerina." She got a good laugh.

As she takes her coat off, I notice the sidearm (concealed) and the badge on her belt. Makes sense.

I wonder how many negative people she's met in her career...

Anyway, let us know how your trip to the dealer goes.

    Luck in battle.

You sir, hit it right on the money. I've wanted to do this since I was a kid, and have always had the naysayers, mostly from the family. I remember sitting in my grandparents living room visiting, years and years ago, and saying I wanted to drive tankers, and of course my mom said no no it's too dangerous. I'm sure in the back if her head, as well as my dad's, this day would eventually come. I'm a tomboy and always will be. I've always liked lowboys, flatbeds, and step decks more than anything.

My grandfather drove back in the 50s - 70s until he was hit by a drunk driver on the side of the road. He's always had a very noticeable crooked back because of that. I can't wait to tell him what I'm about to do :D I will definitely take your advice on doing what I want, not others. I've gone through that crap enough times.

And, the truck dealers near me are closed on the weekends and close at 5 on weekdays which is when I get off :( I'll still find a way though. I really want to sit in a new Peterbilt 389!

I think you'll be surprised at how nice a tractor drives. My first reaction on driving a tractor was; This thing is sweet! ... It's actually luxurious. More like driving a Mercedes than a Chevy.

EDIT: And oh yes. I've gotten my fill of idiots telling me I can't do this, or can't do that. Each time I shoved it down their throat and did better than them. They can take their attitude to hell with them. I'm not going with them.

No reason to ever have to grind. Don't have to move that shifter and force anything. If it doesn't go easy. Don't force. Nice light grinding isn't a problem. You can sit there with the shifter touching the gears lightly... waiting for the right synchro/speed for the gears to mesh together. That's ok... just fine... Just keep it light and easy. Lotsa touch!

I have a friend that I met at the Harley dealer, that has her own motorcycle repair shop. Her dad is a long time biker and she grew up with a love for motorcycles. She decided that she wanted to be a motorcycle mechanic. Everyone told her that she couldn’t. Her mom told her not to as well. Well, she did. And has her own shop. They do good work, and I take my bike there instead of the dealer.

    Live your dream.

My teacher at CDL school says that generally, the girls do better than the guys.
I also admit. We seem to have an overabundance of meatheads here.
Around here where I live. We don't use the "I" word.... Idiot!
