I'm starting orientation Monday Dec.1st ( not to sure after reading some of this stuff). Anyhow I've heard that they have a physcal test you have to pass. Is this true and what ALL do they make you do.

Yes they have a physical strength and stamina test. If you're not a total lard ### you shouldn't have too much trouble but you may get a little winded.

They make you climb in and out of a trailer. You have to be able to duckwalk, You have to lift a milkcrate full of weights repeatedly to chest height. And you have to do a step routine at the pace of some rythmn/beatmaker thingy.

Out of the 15 in my class only one couldn't pass it and that was because he flatly refused to duck walk.

What in the world does Duck walk has to do with Trucking? Fire Fighting I can see. I can get under a trailer, but I can not duck Walk. Reason I was medical Discharge out of the service. Must be able to be on a Fire Team. But I would have to agree with the one who was failed. BS.

all companies must administer a standardized physical test per MCCC/O regs...

pull on bar - pick up weights - stand on one foot - run in place etc etc

    nothing too strenuous.

The duck walk is to simulate stooping under the trailer behind the landing gear to inspect the locking jaws of the fifth wheel. If you get position yourself where you can see the locking jaws then you can probably duck walk also. They want you to check the locking jaws every time you hitch a trailer.

All you have to do is be able to bend over and get under there. Simple, not duck walk.

The bottom line is they want you to check the fifth wheel from under the trailer if you can demonstrate that then I'm sure they'd give you a pass.

It's not like they make you duck walk 60 feet or anything. The nurse asks you to get into a duck walk position and if you can maneuver 4-5 feet then you pass cause that's all you have to move to get line of sight with the locking jaws.

I'm not trying to say it's right or wrong but that was the explanation I heard. There were several guys grossly overweight and they were able to do it even though one split his pants open in the process and had to go back to the hotel to change.:biggrin_25517:

1.7 million miles and I never checked my 5th whl from underneath, just unhooked and looked. That seems DUM.

I knew I was going to take the wrong train so I left early. Yogi Berra

What the hell is a duck walk? We got lots of ducks here in florida & i never thought i would have to emulate a duck to drive a truck!
