CB Channels used in Canada

Ok I know it was over a year ago since you replied but do you know what exactly is involved in getting a license for a VHF radio? Thinking I'm going to get one for my pickup since I do take the occaisional trip up some FSR's for fishing in remote lakes and stuff.

 

And here I thought I had bad breath was why no one would talk to me when I was up in the great white north

 

Industry Canada (Procedures - Spectrum management and telecommunications) is your friend (I'd post more, but I'm on my phone, but let me know if you have issues)

I'm thinking there's only about 8 of us up here who speak the Kings English so the CB is more of a ornament on the dash. Gets about as much use as a dimmer switch in a newbies truck.

 

Been doing a bit more research on this. A lot of what I'm seeing pertains to marine use. It almost looks like I would need to apply for each frequency I'd like programmed into the radio? That'd be quite a few based on the number of FSR's in Western Canada.

 

You only need one licence; a mobile land licence, ~$25 annually. This will include a laundry-list of frequencies, such as the LADD channels, BC Resource Road channels etc. (see note from Industry Canada below). After you get that from Industry Canada you can have your radio programmed by an authorized dealer for all the frequencies listed on your licence.

Although the VHF radio frequencies are public-use, they are assigned by Industry Canada. This means that, in theory, if you want to use an assigned channel (eg., Bob's Log Hauling, Whitecourt 123.123 MHz (fictitious)) that hasn't been listed on your licence you are supposed to get authorization from the assigned party or Industry Canada. In practice most shops will install the frequency if you need it, i.e., you are hauling on "their" road. Generally the only time someone might complain is if the channel is being abused; too much non-related traffic, excessive profanity, etc. The assigned companies themselves don't charge for access, but the radio shops do charge for their work.

If there is a frequency you know you will need (your favourite hunting spot, etc.), but isn't on any of the appendices listed below then get permission/approval/buy the programmer a Timmies.

Of course a programmable radio avoids this problem. If a person had such a thing.
