Hiding from Big Brother

  1. Howdy ya'll.. It's that time of year again. The time when truckers have to idle a little extra to stay warm. Increased idling means increased tension, when you have quotas to meet.

I work for a company who has installed APU's on *most* trucks, but not all... I'm currently driving an '07 w/ 300k on the clock, and have fallen through the cracks.. My truck won't get one :-(

I'm supposed to keep my idle time under 25%, but in the winter that can be tough. I have heard some drivers say that if you short pins 2 and 8 on the qualcomm diag port (on our trucks, this is a round, black port next to the ignition), it will disable sensortracks readings.. thus enabling you to idle to your hearts content without it being logged.

Only problem is, on my truck the port doesn't even have 8 pins! It's got six holes, four of which have pins. The holes are labled A-F.

Can anyone out there straighten out this rather mythical sounding claim?:biggrin_25511:

I wouldn't recommend messing with the qualcomm in a company truck.

Try setting your trailer brakes and not your tractor.

I myself set my tractor and not my trailer, but have had drivers tell me that if you don't set the tractor it does not show as idle. Not sure, but you might test it to see.

  7. I'll try that, I suspect it won't show as "parked" fuel usage..

HOWEVER... I can't use the Icon system without *both* valves pulled, AND, it still shuts off after ~15 minutes. I can do it that way while I'm awake and off-duty.. But kinda impractical when I'm sleeping.

Might be the way to go, though, as I'm not trying to look conspicuous. Turning in 0% idle is not a smart idea!! When I do get over the quota, it's only by a few percent, so idling it manually with the yellow knob in while i'm up reading and stuff might help get me back below 25%... I'm gonna do a little test right now...

  8. OK...:yes2557:

After 3 minutes idling with just the trailer brakes on, my idle percentage is going DOWN! WOOT!

The other quota we have to meet is 6.5 mpg.. So as long as this "off the book" idling doesn't wreck my rolling mpg (which is usually around 6.9), I should get some (pardon the pun) mileage out of this method.

  9. :biggrin_2552: Spoke too soon...

After 5 minutes the status changed to "Long Idle", and the idle percentage starting going up again. Darn. Back to the drawing board.

I'm wanting to say, 05 or 06 was the last year you could do that, on the FreightLiner. And it wasn't the QC output/input, although the QC is programmed through that jack. You cross the wrong thing. And your QC/idle times will be the least of your concerns.

Not sure what you drive, but I did note the 07 in your post.

While I realize you could freeze to death trying to maintain 25% idle times. A good sleeping bag used as a comforter, works wonders. I rarely idle in the winter, unless temps drop below 10 degrees.

Of course, I have a ##### of a time jumping up...firing the truck up, jumping back under the covers, and letting it run long enough to warm the cab. A small 12 volt defroster/heater will take the chill off the air, if you pop for one ;)

Sorry; well there goes that theory.........:biggrin_25523: That's what I get for listening to some truck driver that probably heard it on the CB and I am a truck driver and I told you and you listened and you are a truck driver and ought to know better than listen to a truck driver....:biggrin_25522:
