Let me start by telling some things about myself. I am 23 years old and live in Sacramento. I have decided that I want to be a trucker. I love driving and traveling, so naturally I think I would fit in perfectly.
I went and talked to Swift and they told me that I have to wait 1 more years before I can apply with them because I have a reckless driving on my record that is 2 years old.

So now I have a year and 2 options; wait a year and sign on with swift (or another trucking company), or get a cdl on my own and start looking for work. What would be the better alternative?
In the meantime I am trying to learn as much info as possible. I am doing alot of reading on these forums and trying to learn as much as possible. I want to make sure I make the right decision.

    Thanks Guys!

Hey James, I dont know that I would go out and do it on my own, unless you find an alternate way to fund it, because its so hard for inexperienced, liscensed drivers to find work, since most places are going to ask for a year or two of experience. What a friend of mine did was get his permit on his own, then applied around to places like coke and pepsi, and other beverage distributors, and told them he has his permit and wanted to learn to drive also, and they just kind of worked him from stocking into driving, at pepsi I think it was. Otherwise Id look at other companies, Im not sure how leinient other companies will be about the wreckless driving as opposed to swift, but you could check like werner, schneider, GTi, etc and see what they have to say about it.

witth the reckless driving ticket your going too have too wait the 3 years. With the economy and freight volume down right know thats not a bad idea. I personaly would go with the company sponsored school but not swift. You will be probably contracted too work for that company for a year or so but it will be worth it. Since you have to wait a year I might suggest looking for other work but good luck too you.

thanks for the input Jtrucking and Trips. If I contract with a company, realistically speaking, how many miles am I going to get? How much can I expect to make? I know it won't be much because it'll be more for the experience type situation the first year. But realistically how many miles, pay can I can a rookie expect?

Brinkj23 is a poster on this forum that works for swift in his first year I believe, I think I recall him mentioning he pulls 700-800 a week? He'd have to confirm. Swift has said between 600 and 800 a week, but who knows.

    james3313 Thanks this.

Yeah it varries anywhere between 400-800 a week. Just depends how good freight is at the moment and how many miles I run a week. If I can get a bunch of good loads I can make 800 a week. But doesnt always work that way especially this time of year. My last week I only ran 2200 miles and all my loads this week have been 300 mile runs but I am a midwest regional and the low mile runs are pretty regular but you get a higher cpm on the short runs.

Your reckless conviction may prevent you from working for most motor carriers. It is based upon the criteria of the insurance company whom the carrier is using. In addition, that reckless will be on your MVR for at least 7-years.
