Retiring soon and I'd like to get a CB for when I'm on the road. Don't want to drill any holes in my new Denali or entice any thieves with a permanent mount. Went to a local dealer/installer but he didn't carry any of the handhelds or have anything compact or portable. as a result he had nothing good to say about them. So I came home and got on this website looking for some knowledgeable folks to point me in the right direction.
From what I've read so far some models can increase their range via a magnetic antenna. I believe Wilson's were mentioned. Still what range can one expect from a handheld and who makes the better quality ones.
Not afraid to invest in a solution that works.
Questions about portables or handhelds

Theres a thread here new to CB, got a midland 75-822 in which a couple of handhelds are discussed. An external antenna is a must if you want performance.
I would, however, recommend getting a conventional mobile unit and mount with velcro or something similar. No holes required! -
Setting up a slip seat box with your preferred radio would be your best option if you want decent performance.

What's a slip seat box forgive my ignorance.

Companies make em, id do it yourself.Naptown Thanks this. -
you can get a compact cobra cb for around $40 and put it in the center console and run an external speaker somewhere nearby mounted with velcro or to metal dash frame underneath. probably have to remove some trim pieces and center console to run antenna coax might have to drill hole in bottom of console but it wont be seen.

The boxes in the center pic look sweet. I like the diamond plate, but a nice brushed aluminum would give it a neat retro look too.
I've been thinking of making a box since I slip seat, but haven't gotten around to it. A couple of guys I work with have offered me their old ones, but they're either poorly made and falling apart or big, awkward things that include an am/ fm radio and clunky speakers. I'd like to make something cb only. I wonder since it's enclosed, if heat would be a big factor. Like would I need to put in a fan to keep it cool inside the box? -
Tuffy makes a nice theftproof lockable console.
