As someone who may be going into a training company to get my CDL, will the holiday season have any impact on whether they accept applicants or not? I imagine they are extra careful during this month due to people wanting to get home and possibly dropping out when they can't but I may be wrong.
Holiday season, bad time to apply?

I could be wrong but I don't think they ever stop. Trucking sure doesn't stop, this is 24-7-365 operation. The CDL mills are making money off of new applicants and that's there only concern. If you do get with a trainer and he decides to go home for a day or two you may just get put up in a motel around his home area... It will vary by company... I wouldn't let the holiday season stop you from applyingJust passing by, Longarm and Dugan_nash Thank this.

Depends on the carrier and the freight market. Van freight is nuts this time of year. Flat deck falls off.

Did you decide not to attend a private school?

From what I've seen from my narrow point of view. The ones who want the Holidays off. They don't show up. Don't apply.
I know of one trainer who complained about people not showing up to train during winter. Same guy told me there was no problem with my showing up at Christmas (with a license). Said they always work at that terminal. -
My hire date was 12/8/10, and there were plenty of people in orientation with me.
They do not care about people wanting to get home for the holidays. If you start, you are in it for the duration.
If you drop out, no matter to them. There are always more bodies coming in every day.DoubleO7 Thanks this. -
Still might look into it on if I'm eligible for government assistance. I'm afraid even if I go private I will have a hard time finding a company who will hire someone with no verifiable work experience in the past 3-5 years (went back to college full-time, graduated in 2016 and have been jobless since).
@Chinatown What companies have you heard of hiring people with large gaps of unemployment? Sorry I should have mentioned this in my post under the CDL School section. I'm sure this makes a big difference in companies who will hire me.
I have no commitments, bills or rent at home so not making much to start off is not a huge deal for me to get started in this industry. If I have to go with a mega like Swift then that's fine, but I figured I 'd go ahead and get my CDL through them as well instead of financing and getting more debt in a private school. -
During the time frame you were in college, you weren't unemployed so list that time as "student." Even the summer breaks, you were still a "student." List the entire time as "student"; 2012 - 2016 - student at XYZ College.
Apply for some trucking company schools and if that doesn't work, go to private school, then hire on with a company that reimburses the tuition directly back to you.

I am a trainer and don't go home for the holidays. So, if I have a trainee, we will run Christmas day if we have a load.
