LOGSRUS: How can anyone post-trip the trailer they are dropping and complete the Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (396.11), then drop the trailer, then hook to the new trailer, then pre-trip the new trailer 392.7) and record the time on an RDS in less that 8 minutes (flagging rule), or for that matter less than 15 minutes (see my post in this section under "been 5-years since I drove") to which you agreed??????????????
Maybe I'm being an instigator in this instance but I fail to see it happening unless the driver is also named Clark Kent & he came from another planet.

aha - this brings up a question...
If I'm doing a D&H, is a post trip (DVIR) needed on the dropped trailer? I know if I drive a second truck, it is - but is a trailer considered a "vehicle"?
(Note: I always conducted the inspection anyway - the last thing I wanted was another driver mad at me because the trailer had some issue. I even made sure reefers were fully fueled when I dropped them) -
Yes. It is the end of your working day for that vehicle. The word vehicle in this instance takes on a very broad term. So a trailer is in fact a vehicle. I believe the Websters dictionary also defines it a a vehicle. In addition, J J Keller actually makes books the size of a log page that is nothing but DVIR's for this purpose.
Many safety directors are ex drivers and/or ex state officers and don't know the rules. With this in mind it becomes easy to understand why the extra DVIR books are not offered to drivers.Last edited: Nov 4, 2008
Lurchgs and AfterShock Thank this. -

Im thinking maybe you confused who wrote something such as Lurchgs.
I said thanks to you for confirming a driver would log line 4 for post-trip inspections as many of the drivers are not doing this today!
Im not sure where you get me saying they can flag a post-trip in less than 8 minutes? I stress to the drivers that it will take # least 15 minutes and honestly a good post-trip inspection is going to take 30 minutes! Which I am focusing on the post-trip inspection required # the end of the day.
Now if a driver is dropping, hooking & post-tripping I know it's going to take # least 30 minutes!
Also again: I stress to the drivers everything they do is going to take # least 15 minutes! If they can do a pre-trip in less than 7.5 min then flag it, I mean they did just do a thorough inspection the night before and haven't moved the truck.psanderson Thanks this. -
Ok now I found what I believe you are responding to. It helps if you quote since i respond so much sometimes (not as much lately) and I don't have time to run through messages to figure out what's I said previously.
No I what I meant below is if they are just dropping a trailer & post-tripping OR hooking and pre-tripping. Not doing all three at the same time. Sorry didn't mean to mislead anyone.
I again stress to the drivers it's going to take them a minimum of 15 minutes. If they do a fuel along with it I know it will take a min of 30 minutes.psanderson Thanks this. -
Yeap pretty much what I tell drivers. If you don't feel the officer was right call me and we will discuss it. I tell them not to argue with the officer because he pretty much thinks he is right so just go on and call us.AfterShock Thanks this. -
I shouldn't have said it that way. I should have said I agree Re. logging the proper time frame. I apologize for any misdirection in that regard.
