the office job. after a point in life, i want to be more stationed in one place, maybe not having to travel to anything more than say corporate meetings. i think there are pressures from both jobs, but the office job is a step up the ladder, rather than a stagnant driver or o/o.

also too, as we age, some drivers have health issues, and must do what is needed to maintain that health card. this can be difficult from one driver to another. then what? sell off the equipment and call it quits, when one still has a background for more things to do?

health issues may not necessarily hold back an office worker. and no need for a CDL and that mandatory health card.

to choose from one job to another, is based on each person at the time. no one can fully predict their future or job opportunities that come along.

 

Tough call...

 

I actually made that choice back in 2008.
I will tell you that I miss the truck. You can take the boy out of the truck, but you can't take the truck out of the boy!
$70,000.00 per year is not enough unless there are other perks. There are lots of headaches and a very steep learning curve with this ever changing industry.

 

Do you own your own truck already? If not and the company is going to train you as a safety and compliance guy l would take the office job.

 

Just remember... the closer you are to the sun... the hotter it gets. Management can be a dangerous place to be if the company decides to tighten its belt.

 

but then, as a former driver (or o/0), one can get back on the road again, as long as at least the DOT card is not expired.

so it makes sense to have a back up plan.

 

The office nearly killed me (Ops Manager, Oil and Gas), thats why I started trucking (after being laid off) I'm with an amazing company (retirement job as far as i'm concerned) as a company driver now. They mention the idea now and again, of me being an Ops or Terminal manager. I told them I appreciate it, but I would rather be an O/O in a day cab doing city, assisting a Terminal Manager when need be.

 

Neither! I quit dealing with human beings when I started trucking. Don't need to deal in person with earthlings.
O/O, no just because I see too many failing due to mechanical failures beyond their control. Technology really sucks the wallet dry. Company driver or crossing guard...days only. Weekends and summers off..YA!
