Data Usage Limitation (Mobile Broadband Cards, USB Modems, Embedded Modems and Phone-As-Modem): The amount of data transmitted over our network is measured in kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB). Sprint reserves the right to limit throughput speeds or amount of data transferred; and to deny, terminate, modify, disconnect or suspend service if usage either exceeds (a.) 5GB/month in total, unless specified otherwise or (b.) 300MB/month while off-network roaming. 1024KB equal 1MB. 1024MB equal 1GB.
No worries, not the first person someone's been lied to by a rep.
Perhaps worth mentioning is the fact that if you're using this phone-as-modem on an iDEN phone, you're going to be hard-pressed to even use 5GB/month. The iDEN max theoretical speed can't even come close to the average speed of an EVDO data card.

Pricing
Unlimited Wireless PC Access Plan - $45.00 flat monthly fee. No overage or per-minute charges. Does not use your cellular plan minutes.
Google nextel.
Not sure where you were looking that up, but here's what I'm talking about. This would be covered under "unless specified otherwise", I would think.Last edited by a moderator: Nov 27, 2008

If you search, there are programs to allow your smartphone to tether undetected. Use at your own risk as I am not sure if they are legal or not but the tech geeks at my old job used them all the time.

for me, the most telling point CMoore raised is the bandwidth. Speeds involved are NOT broadband.. "20-40 Kbps" is dialup modem speeds.
Whether or not it's truely unlimited matters not if the pipe is too small to get sufficient data. Now, for MOST people, this kind of bandwidth should be plenty. For some of us.. "it is to laugh" -
I tried tethering my PDA with AT&T but they couldn't sync with my laptop because I run Linux OS. So, I'm stuck scavenging for wi-fi wherever I can find it. My experiences have been varied, but generally successful. T/A is ok, though slow sometimes. Someone mentioned a while back that they couldn't pick up SIRICOMM, well I think it's because they are currently in some sort of lawsuit right now so are not allowed to sell services. More importantly, I'm boycotted Flying J because of their ridiculously tiny bandwidth limit. I just sent them an e-mail stating that I'll never patronize their stores again (for all the good that'll do
).
Now I seek out some of the independents that have free wi-fi and look for areas where I can leach it off motel chains and what-not. I'm sitting at Shoemakers in Lincoln, NE right now doing just that! Yeah I know I'm a Cheap Charlie

air time card , or a data cable from phone to usb port .... Like today , i was lost on D road outside of moorcroft Wyoming ( directions said look for a big black oil tank east side of the road ) needless to say it wasnt there pulled over , tried my GPS , no luck so I got online and used my location on google earth and found the road I needed .........

Texas has free wi-fi in their rest areas. Most but not all of them. -
From my research, it is just as expensive to tether your phone as it is to use an aircard. May be cheaper with aircard, depending on which sevice you use. Looks like Sprint is the cheapest so far.
Later.... -
Nah, last I knew Sprint had the phone-as-modem for $40/month on the CDMA devices with the same terms as the aircard. However, I've yet to see an EVDO phone compete with the speeds of a connection card.
