It's about a lot of things. No way you can assign this eLog push to only one driving factor.
And probably it's a combination of many/all of these possibilities driving this mandate.
- "safety" meaning fewer crashes (or so somebody thinks)
- "level playing field" (lobbying by mega trucking company lobbyists)
- consistent ability to audit and mange compliancy checks by auditors and field CMV cops
- "increased safety perception" for public consumption as proposed by the ATA and other trucking associations
- some group of congress members invested heavily in key device/service providers such as Qualcomm
- and probably a few others.
And in response to another post. An ambulance chaser lawyer would much prefer taking chances on a paper logger then a driver running on a reputable eLog system. Paper loggers who did falsify and were in a geographical location they should not have been at the time of the crash can be proven when push comes to shove. So no. I don't feel accident lawyers are behind this push at all. In fact probably just the opposite. They'd probably prefer every trucker remain on paper.
I think ELDs are Unconstitutional

And they’ll be a lot less trucks stopping at every exit to nap and eat and annoy the cashiers, that should really reduce accidents and make the streets near the exits a lot safer. -

Wish you guys GOOD.LUCK ... ELD's are inhumane no-one gives a rats A about "life & limb" anymore entire southbound Atlanta was shut down / backed up for three hours Weds because of one idiot getting out of his car????
Southbound I-85 blocked after man hit while exiting car
If it weren't for traffic cams, ELD's and instant reporting cell-phones I'm sure highways would be a murderous "free-for-all" by now!! ENJOY YOUR LEASH only laugh when I hear cussing each other out on radio all day!!Last edited: Dec 8, 2017

And I'll add a few more very important accolades-
Once Drivers/owner-ops start getting Shorted pay (Because shippers and brokers do what they want) because of Late Deliveries.............It Should Bring a lot of Angry Drivers front and Center
Driver-"I Just couldn't make it.....I was in traffic for three hours then My 14 ran out on my ELD"
Broker- "Well,I've got a pizzed off customer right now and they are charging me $200 for a late delivery,Which I'll be charging you"
Tell ya What- To All the ELD Huggers out there- Until you Show us representation that stands behind each driver to ensure monies are NEVER taken because of an ELD making a driver late- I'll Buy one.
I can see for miles the Complications and Tardiness with Angry stressed out Drivers trying to make that Produce Delivery or Wal-Mart delivery with an ELD. A Ton of Temper-tantrums from even experienced drivers -
House passes CC gun law loosening regulationsDoubleO7 Thanks this.
