Other than ingesting oil from a turbo or something, how would that happen in a Cat? Flyweights in the governor come off?

    SAR Thanks this.

Ideally it would be great to have a pre-lube oil pump like on this CAT 994

My local Caterpillar dealer has got a 12 volt pre-lube pump for a 3408, soon as he gets his finger out I'll be buying it if it's the right price.

Rack could be sticking in full load or start position.
Happened to me, not on a Cat, but on a John Deere 4440 that had been sitting for a long time.

I was in the driver seat, cab door open.
Good thing that there was no hose on the turbo-inlet, and turbo-inlet is facing to the rear. And good thing that John Deere had these half round cab doors.
I could stand up from the seat and put my foot on the turbo-inlet to half-smother the engine untill somebody arrived with a wooden plate to close the inlet completely.

My boots were too new, too much profile left so too much air could still get past for the engine to keep on running, but at a reasonable rpm.
Turbo shaft and nut made a nice round hole in the sole of my new boots though.:(

It should still shut down with the key if the rack is stuck.

    Oxbow Thanks this.

I'll NEVER forget the first time that happened to me a 718cc 2 stroke (and it was modified with no rev limiter). I stuck my foot and shoe over the exhaust.

Maybe a Cat, but the JD did not have an electric shut-off valve. Everything mechanical.
Pull-cable to shut off the engine, but did not work either.

    Oxbow Thanks this.
