Other defenses besides a firearm:
Tire thumper
Flatbedder's winch bar
Blade
Starter fluid + lighter
Heavy Maglite style flashlight
Good pair of steel toe boots and a kick a mule would respect
Best self defense is 'situational awareness'. Know what is going on around you, get out before a situation gets dangerous. I carry at home, but have yet to feel the need to carry in my truck. Comes down to it, my truck is a far more effective weapon. Plus all the goodies I carry, none of which are generally considered weapons. They are all tools.
Guns??? Concealed carry?

Tater's advice for the day:
Regardless of what you decide to carry or keep around for self defense use, it is worthless unless you actually take the time to learn to use it in an effective way to defend yourself. And practice with it.
Just having a gun, or mace, or a tire thumper, or a golf club, as a defense talisman, like it's a lucky rabbit's foot, isn't going to actually protect you. You have to put the time in to learn the laws that apply and learn to use the #### thing effectively. If you aren't willing to put in the work, you might as well just slap a "No Violence Zone" sticker on your truck and call it good. -
Just a little FYI.
New Jersey and NYC are the two to watch out for, they have the worst laws.
There is a bill that is being talked about in congress but I don't know if it will go far. If it passes, then all states will have to recognize all other state's permits. -
I went out yesterday and picked up that little baby Glock 42 .380... Much easier for me to carry concealed in the winter months than my Glock 23 40 S&W. But, I am seriously considering heading back up to the gun store today to grab the Glock 42 9mm, which is just a tad bit larger than the 42... Decisions decisions...

In many states, the truck sleeper would be covered under that state's 'castle doctrine.' The CCW would allow you to carry on you. One of the great things about going through the CCW class is that they explain the legal stuff to you. The first thing they will explain is that you are liable for that bullet you fired, wherever it may go. For that reason, companies do make less lethal rounds. Yes, I know...I watched Dirty Harry too, but real world talk, from a truck cab, if you fire, theres a good chance that you will miss. And if you miss, you are liable for that bullet fired. So be smart about it. Most people arent smart. You can tell this in how they drive. They drive just well enough to get themselves killed. And they buy guns and carry. They carry a gun with the same skillset that they drive a car with.
You want something that will do the job up close, yet will not penetrate a wall 100 yards away. So the type gun you buy is very important. The type round you buy is just as important. Yes, I know that Dirty Harry didn't worry about these things. I bought a Remington 870 Express Tac. Nice little gun. The legal factory sawed off shotgun. Did a little research on bullets and went with rubber slugs. Lethal at close range, but will not penetrate the interior walls of the a house. The first 2 rounds in the gun are less than lethal. The last 3 are the real deal. If it still moves after the first two, that third shot is devastating.
You know how when you are in the truck for a couple days, you get into this rhythm. Go home for a week, and you lose a bit of your rhythm. When you get back into the truck, you feel a slight bit off. Same thing goes with CCW. If you plan to carry, your gun should become an essential. You get up in the morning, put your clothes on, wallet, keys, cell phone, EDC blades, and gun. You get home, shoot some rounds off, clean and oil the gun and reload. Dont be one of those people that carry but never practice shooting.tscottme, Flacrkr, shogun and 1 other person Thank this. -
Or just carry a scary blade and a real bad resting b**ch face. Hold the appearance of being the person people don't want to play with, but be prepared to back it up.
I know a few female drivers. Flatbedders. They don't look near as tough as they are, and these are NOT women to screw with. They will seriously mess you up. Especially with the blunt object smashy smashy stuff I showed them a few tricks with.
As for me, a 6'2" 280 lb screaming Irishman racing at you waving something sharp is generally gonna put most thugs a step or two back. Failing that, just hit'em with the truck and disappear. Make sure you get a wash right quick to deal with evidence. Tell the Streakin' Beacon ya hit a deer.NightWind Thanks this. -
@TripleSix
How much did you give for that Remington if I may ask? Academy Sports down here on Black Friday had them for $319.i actually grabbed one to buy it, but put it back since I have one and will just get the conversion kit and save a little money. It was tough to put it back, that’s a sharp looking gun.TripleSix Thanks this. -
Remington is suffering from quality issues by many reports. Their stock has been suffering due to this since being bought out. Just saying.

When I went through the academy, we were sprayed with Freeze+P, a combination of CS gas and pepper spray, about 2.5 million scoville heat units I believe. It was so freakin painful and lasted forever!!! However, there are some people in the world it doesn’t affect. I watched one guy in particular wipe it right off his eyes, didn’t affect him in the least while some people had to be carried to the water hoses, it was unbelievable how it didn’t phase him.
As far as edge weapons, it’s typically 21 feet plus blade length. I was dealing with a guy one day in the projects who had a T-shirt balled up in his right hand that supposedly concealed A knife. He was a local mentally ill guy. He kept walking away from me but talking crazy, and as I approached him, he never responded to my commands to drop what was in his hand. He moved aggressively towards me, so I drilled him with my Tazer from about 15 feet and down he went like a statue. It was one of the best demo’s of the tazer since there was a lot of people watching.
I would have been justified in shooting him based on the call I received but it this situation 50k volts was the right call.TaterWagon#62 and captjimmy Thank this. -
I have a tire bat that is leaded I bet I can get a great swing with it if I miss with the gun.BigBob410 Thanks this.
