Bought the 75-822 for reasons listed in my other post. Wasn't having much luck getting a good signal so I decided to visit a local CB store on my lunch hour to purchase a SWR meter, what a mistake, all those shiny new Cobras really peaked my impulse buying buttons. After a lengthy discussion with my now new CB consultant Guy, his real name, I popped for a 29LTD and a K40 mag base antenna. May have been lured in by the alleged good deal he was offering. Paid 115 for the radio and 135 for the antenna. Really liked Guy he answered all my questions and was quite patient with my ignorance on the subject. Never did get the SWR meter but GUY said he would fix up the Midland tomorrow when I go in to pick up my new Cobra.
Still don't want to drill any holes in the Accadia but I'm thinking I might be able to velcro it to the side of my console. Any of you folks out there done this and how well does it work? Also did I get a fair price?

Good strong velcro works just fine. I used velcro for years

The $115 for the 29ltd is a fairly good deal.... but it sounds like he is making up for the loss $$$'s on the radio by over charging you on the K40 antenna. I assume you are referring to the K40 magnet mount antenna. I see Bells CB has this antenna for $84.50 plus whatever shipping is. Maybe Guy will check your antennas SWR and tune the K40 antenna for you for free???
rabbiporkchop Thanks this. -
Yes tuning the Cobra and my Midland is part of the deal. Which brings up another question. Do your antenna settings change from vehicle to vehicle?
-
Sure the SWRs can change on different cars, and on different places on the same car, but hopefully they will stay in a good range. Get that $25 SWR meter so you'll be able to check this no matter what vehicle you stick that magnet on. The magnet mount is as versatile as you can get.

By "tuning," did he explain what he means? More than one radio has been degraded in an attempt to "improve" on the factory specs. Just because a radio looks "stronger" on the watt meter doesn't mean it's "better." The ravages caused by misguided Golden Screwdrivers are legendary in the CB world.rabbiporkchop Thanks this.

Thanks for all the feedback. I checked this fellow out before going there, he got rave reviews and has been at this store for 40 years. Does this Cobra unit come with a decent mic or do you advise an upgrade?
-
Usually the cobra stock mics aren’t very good, they’re made out of cheap plastic. If you can listen on another radio, and squeeze the microphone you can hear creaking sounds through the other radios speaker. I use a ranger sra 198 noice canceling mic, and it sounds really good. I got it off of eBay for $26. -
Went and picked up my new Cobra today, it's shiny and has all kinds of switches and knobs, so much cooler than the Midland I bought. Works great too my new CB consultant did an excellent job of tuning it up for me. Kinda forgot how many wierdos are on the air, one guy wouldn't stop talking about his sex life, another guy was playin his radio through the CB and yet another kept howlin like he was getting a tooth pulled. Still in all I'm happy with the purchase just hope to find some civil people to talk with. Biggest problem is coming up with a mount for the accadia. My pickup truck is a no brainer but the #### soccer mom car doesn't have a flat surface anywhere inside the cabin. Here's an issue most everyone can relate to.
While in the store I picked up an SWR meter to tune the midland with because I forgot to bring it along, get it home and low and behold I have two male connectors going to the radio hookup.
Just like the plumbing project at home where you go to home depot and buy what you think is just the right tool for the job, get home and find out it's 1/2" short of reaching the fitting you need to loosen up.
