With the technology that's out there how there is no reason to block phones in a vehicle.
However there is no valid reason to be using the phone for anything while driving.

Self driving, smh. Call a cab, take a bus, hire a chauffeur. Talk about taking the fun out of driving. :)

There's no reason it can't be done. There are reasons not to do it.

The eye/vision monitoring technology has been around for quite some time. I was working on a pipeline project in Chile last year and the prime contractor (Bechtel-Techint) had it in all of the foreman/supervisor pickups. It had some issues with sensitivity and false alarms, but overall it wasn't too bad. It is much better suited for rural and highway driving than an urban environment. It was problematic when on the pipeline right-of-way.

Obviously Cadillac has taken it several steps beyond and it is rather impressive. The entire limited access highway networks of two countries mapped to four inches... wow.

Two things stand out to me; the mapping and the shut-down feature. As mentioned, the amount of work that has gone into the mapping and related GPS is considerable. For any self-driving system I think this is a critical component and it seems Cadillac is well-ahead of the pack and will likely be able to capitalize on it beyond just using it in their cars.

The shut-down feature is something I was going to mention in my comments the other day about the Tesla accident; if only it had done the same the accident wouldn't have happened.

How about if it is hooked up to an 'on star' type system and if the phone is on then the on star is on. Or some such system?
