Well boys I finally got our dump truck in the shop to inspect the PTO and was hoping for an easy fix. @ShooterK2 you are spot on as to why mine won't release. Pieces of broken gear teeth had fallen into the shift chamber and jammed the fork so it could not slide anymore.![]()

The truck has a Eaton FRO16210C. The PTO gears look good. However, the transmission gear teeth are not so good. I was really disappointed at the damage I saw up in there. There was broken teeth on a couple countershaft gears and also some gears on the main shaft. I imagine that a tooth broke at some point in time and just raised hell with everything else in there .

This would explain why I was getting a knocking or ticking noise while going down the road and also while revving the engine to get the box in the air.
The truck maybe gets 200 miles a year on it and only gets 10 miles from the farm. When I dumped the oil it was surprisingly clean and not much on the drain plug magnet. As of right now I am going to clean things up, put oil back in and park it. I did a quick google search on this tranny and looks like I can get a used one for 1500-2000. @snowman_w900 I think I read awhile back where you pulled your trans down to replace some gears. Are they expensive or not to bad? If I'm looking at replacing a lot of gears is it time to just look for another transmission and switch them out? Thanks in advance!

@SAR , honestly if your gonna pull it apart to change the gears, you might as well figure a complete rebuild kit (suitcase kit) and do the whole thing. To get the counter shafts out the whole main box will be stripped down and then you gotta press those pto gears off, and then press the new ones on. Not super exspensive or hard really, just time labor intensive.
If it were my everyday money maker, I'd rebuild the whole thing or swap a reman in, but in your case, 200 mile a year I think I'd find me a good used one and just freshen it up with gaskets, hi low synchro and bolt on a new pto and roll with it. That's just my opinion.
Price wise, I'd say to go through that transmission your self I'm guessing you'd have around a grand building it if you didn't find much else wrong with it.

Sorry to hear about your trans SAR, but at least you have some good and knowledgeable friends on here to help with decisions.
