I need some info on tire chains. I have never owned a set. I normally do not run much in the winter but due to being broke I have to. I am set to pick a load tomorrow and go to Denver. What states require me to have them in the truck? Thanks

Colorado yes just have then in your truck to be safe. Google chain law it will tell you
-
Go to each DOT website for each state you will go to.
CO requires chains on the 70 (and I forgot the mile markers) from Sept 1 thru May 31.
Also CA and WA require "drag chains" on the trailer.
Lastly and IMHO the most important tip (I wish I remembered who stated this originally):
Chains are used to get out of bad conditions, not to get into them. -
The Colorado Motor Carriers Association and the Colorado Department of Transportation remind trucking companies that all commercial vehicles must carry chains on Interstate 70 from mileposts 163 to 259 (roughly the first hundred miles west of the Denver metro area) from Sept. 1 through May 31. This annual requirement went into effect a year ago. Not carrying chains during this period can mean a $67 fine, even if the road is clear at the time. Colorados penalties for not being chained up when youre required to be are much higher, and run up to $1,000 plus a surcharge if a truck doesnt have chains and blocks traffic.
thomas Thanks this. -
I'm glad you found the info....

I'm on the road with my laptop and left my chain cheat sheet at home.... -

So if I do not run west of Denver do they still require them in the truck? -
I would carry 3 sets (4 sets for CA) of chains.
2 sets on the drivers (outers) will get by in most states that require chains.
3 sets drivers (outers) and two trailer tires for WA.
All 4 for CA which requires all 4 tires of the front drivers, the outers of the rear drivers, and two (on the diagonal) trailer tires. Although someone mentioned (I think it was Neil in Nevada) who suggested another set for the steers while going through Donner. At that point, I'd park it and call it a day...maybe somewhere where there is plenty of hot coffee..... -
Thanks to all!!! I was hopeing I could get away with not buying any.... I think they are kinda expensive. I guess to be on the safe side I should get some.
Thanks -
Instead of running all singles get 1 set of triples and then a set of singles. The triples will get you most places and the singles will be back up. I also advise on a single tire chain for a steer tire as a just incase. I have never needed mine but it is nice to have.]
Also a good set of tires like Michellin XDS tread will deffinatley help when you don't need chains.Working Class Patriot Thanks this.
